Revised powerplants from both Cosworth and
Ferrari have boosted hopes of a
successful end to the season for Tyrrell and Sauber.
The British team tested its version of the Phase 10 Ford customer unit at
Magny-Cours during last week's test, claiming that it improved both the
handling and power potential of the 026 model.
The engine is mounted fractionally lower in the car than the previous unit,
requiring a redesigned drivetrain and chassis modifications, but increases
rear end grip and helps cornering. It also features an increased rev limit
and better power delivery.
The unit is similar to that with which Stewart finished the 1997 season,
but will not be used by the Minardi team as it costs more than the previous
Phase 9 engine.
Sauber also tested a new engine at the Magny-Cours test. The revised
Petronas-badged
Ferrari unit will make its first public appearance at the
Canadian Grand Prix.
