The Weston Beach Race was cancelled almost immediately yesterday after a horrendous crash at the massed start left several riders injured.

The three hour endurance test sees 1000 riders start simultaneously down a one mile long start straight before heading into a complex and testing dune section, but this year a mass pile up on the straight saw the red flag come out within seconds of the start.

Seventeen riders required medical attention, taxing the onsite first aid as they transported the injured to hospital, and it became clear that, as busy as they were dealing with the incident, there wasn't sufficient first aid cover available to allow the race to restart.

One rider is reported to have suffered serious injuries.

It's believed that the race will at present be rerun next Sunday, the 18th of October.
