Weston Beach Race postponed

The annual Weston Beach Race looks likely to be postponed for a short while following the red flag incident during the first running of the race.

The original hope was that the race would be rerun just a week later, as it was back in 2002, but the subsequent increase in legislation for the organisers of such a massive event are so vast as to make the task impossible.

Race organisers RHL Activities spent two days directly following the abortive race in intensive meetings with North Somerset Council and the emergency services in an attempt to organise the rerun, but the event has had to be postponed until further notice as the emergency services are unable to put the required massive resources into place at such short notice.

A statement on the re-running of the 2009 solo race is expected at some time this week.

Seventeen riders were hospitalised for treatment following a pile-up seconds after the three-hour endurance race got underway in terrible conditions - sixteen-year-old Ty Kellet remains in a serious condition in hospital.
