Drama and broken bones in German GP thriller

Drama hit the German GP as the men who led both the MX2 and MXGP championships both failed to score any points after crashes that saw them both break bones and be carted off for surgery.

In the MX2 race, championship leader Jeffrey Herlings crashed on the very first jump, braking his collarbone. He still ended the day 100 points clear in the series from GP winner Tim Gajser, who left the day a single point ahead of Valentin Guillod.

In the MXGP class, Max Nagl broke a bone in his ankle in qualifying and had immediate surgery. With with Nagl out Frenchman Romain Febvre took the lead in the championship in what is his rookie season. He took the GP overall – his third GP overall win in three rounds – thanks to a win in the opening moto and then a second behind Gautier Paulin after charging through the field.

Febvre said: “I'm really happy. I took some good steps today although my second race was not too good. I had some problem with my goggles. Third GP in a row and the red plate is not so bad!”

Paulin took second overall, thanks to his second moto win after finishing third in the opener behind his team-mate Evgeny Bobryshev. Third overall was Kevin Strijbos.

But the gutsiest race was from world champ Tony Cairoli, still in huge pain from his broken arm. In the opener, Cairoli got a good start but soon drifted back to an eventual 14th. But he holeshot the second race and led for a few laps, then staying right behind Dean Ferris until the French freight train of Febvre and Paulin got past.

Cairoli eventually slipped back to an amazing sixth place as he bids to keep his championship hopes alive. Cairoli is now on 352 points, just eight behind Max Nagl while Febvre is ahead on 369.

In the MX2 championship, Briton Max Anstie gave the Dixon team their first moto win on Kawasaki after 20 years on Yamaha. Anstie holeshot the second race and took the win from TimGasjer – winner of the first moto who took the overall win.

Anstie took second overall but nothing could take away the glory of his race two win. “It was just like Matterley. But I thought I'm not getting passed in last two laps this time!”

Gajser, start-to-finsh winner of the first moto, said: “The second race was different as I didn't get a start like in the first race.”

Third overall was Valentin Guillod, still struggling with a foot injury. His day was made worse when he hit the gate in the second moto and fell while charging through the pack.
