Musquin edges closer to Martin

KTM man Marvyn closes in on US National 250 glory as Dungey rules 450s
Marvin Musquin closed the gap on leader Jeremy Martin to just four points after the KTM man tied equal on points with Yamaha's Cooper Webb at a muddy Washougal US National. Webb got the overall as he won the second moto but Musquin's 47-points haul edged him closer to Martin.

Christian Craig led from the flag in the opener but fell and remounted in fourth. Webb held the lead for most of the race until Musquin challenged hard, almost clashing with the Yamaha man several times.

Musquin held his advantage to the flag from Webb while Arnaud Tonus took third in his first ever outdoor National.

Musquin said: “The mud was so sticky and heavy. At one point I was second and thought 20 points was good as I didn't want to get roosted too much. If you get off line it's so deep and muddy. We were going all over the place, it was so sketchy and I made so many mistakes. But I made it happen. This win feels good.”

Webb said: “My goggles broke and I tossed them and couldn't see any more. Once Musquin got round me I wasn't going to let him beat me but I didn't have the time. He was cross-jumping and almost his my front wheel three or four times. If I get the chance this next one I'm going to put him down.”

Tonus, in his first race since recovering from Epstein-Barr virus, said: ”I've spent more time on the couch than training as I had to rest for a long time. To be on the podium is really amazing and unexpected."

In Moto two Jeremy Martin led and fought to hold off Webb in an incredible battle until Martin slipped off. Web took the lead to win from Musquin while Martin took third from Aaron Plessinger, who ended third overall.

In the 450 class, Ryan Dungey and Justin Barcia ended up level on points after first and second place moto finishes each, but Dungey got the nod after winning the second outing, but the 47-point haul saw Barcia go level in second place in the series with Ken Roczen. Both are 69 points behind the KTM man.

In the first moto Barcia took the holeshot and cleared off to a huge 25-second win from Dungey who eventually battled past Christophe Pourcel for runner-up spot, as current champ Ken Roczen struggled in seventh.

Barcia said: “My mental game is strong right now!” Dungey said: “These conditions are really rare. The 250 class left one line but the track got better. I tried to pass Pourcel as quick as I could. I saw Barcia had a good lead so I through I'd be smart.”

And Pourcel was happy. He said: “The track was good and I got stuck in third. I tried to pass Ryan back but he had more speed.”

In the second moto Barcia once again led but slipped off, allowing Dungey through to take the win. Roczen took third place for fourth overall behind Pourcel.
