A massive display of tactical riding was seemingly in evidence in the final 250 moto in Utah at the weekend. With Marvin Musquin and Jeremy Martin locked together in the points race for the title, the return and strong form of Cooper Webb has only served to rob both of them of vital points in the championship.

But Webb's strong form and speed appeared to take an unexpected and decidedly convenient dip in the final race at the weekend as he quite clearly slowed, looked back over his shoulder only for his team mate Jeremy Martin to take Webb's first place position and go on to take the overall. The two even fist pumped each other after the race as Martin appeared to acknowledge the contribution of his team-mate.

The additional points also served to return the red plate to Martin, negating Musquin's win and higher points in the first race. After two races Musquin is still two points adrift of Martin - a situation that would not have been the case had Webb won the second race as he was obviously capable of. Team tactics are not allowed in the AA series so it will be intertesting to see whether the two riders are in any way called to explain the move, and no doubt KTM will be far from happy at that this gamesmanship in the final throes of the season.

The move had echoes of another controversial episode in motocross history. Back in 1977, Broc Glover and Danny LaPorte were vying for the 125cc National championship, and the title was down to the final race in the series and Yamaha had drafted in every one of their riders to race the class in an apparent effort to points-block Suzuki's LaPorte. Bob Hannah was out in front, a situation that would have meant that LaPorte rather than his team mate Glover would win. In the last lap of the race, Hannah's mechanic, Keith McCarthy, held out a hand written sign saying 'Let Brock Bye'. Despite the spelling errors, Hannah got the message, slowed dramatically which allowed Glover to pass. The pitboard was swiftly rubbed out, but the moment was caught by Motocross Action's Jody Weisel - clearly to Yamaha's intense embarrassment.

But the job was done - Glover got three more points than LaPorte at the meeting meaning that the two were tied on points but as Glover had better race finishes in the season, he was the one who became 1977 125cc champion.
