Simpson takes championship as Anstie edges closer

Reigning MX1 Champion Shaun Simpson tied up his second 450 championship in his usual dominant style as the penultimate round of the Maxxis British Motocross championship headed north to Preston Docks.
With the final result never really in doubt, the actual win came in a slightly undramatric way as Simpson's only possible challenger, Tanel Leok was unable to start his LPE Kawasaki. With the riders in the holding pen, it was too late to swap to a spare bike and so Simpson just had to get a decent points haul in the first race and the title was his. Ashley Wilde was the one who got the drop in one of the stand-out races of his career, but it wasn't long before Simpson took over the lead and from that moment on, he and his Factory KTM were in cruise control.
Sensibly keeping the heel-clickers until the last lap, Simpson crossed the line to be greeted by his elated team already dressed in the 'Simpson#1' T shirts, taking his third British title and second MX1 crown. Job done.

The remaining two motos were understandably less dramatic with the title already decided, But Simpson still took the two remaining wins and the overall victory to continue his unblemished record. Following him to the podium were Kristiam Whatley who yet again returned from injury with a podium result and Gaeme Irwin who defied a crash in the first moto to pull together three strong races. Wilde missed out on the podium by a narrow five points in what was a stunning ride in the Preston sand.

Former British champ Billy MacKenzie had put in a wild-card ride on a bike supplied by Steve Dixon, but a big crash in the very first moto might have made him question his decision. He managed to come back to 18th over the course of the race, following that with a tenth and eighth in the remaining races.

In MX2, again it was a familiar pattern with Max Anstie blasting to three virtually unopposed wins. Title challenger Steve Lenoir was suffering with an injured shoulder but was able to keep his championship alive with a gutsy scorline of 5-4-3 for third overall. Edging him onto the lowest step of the podium was Adam Sterry who was the only one who seemed to have any speed to challenge Anstie, albeit somewhat briefly. His two seconds and a sixth was good enough for second on the day.

Conrad Mewse took his first steps in MX2 with a great scoreline of 11-11-5 good enough for overall eighth on the day.

In MXY2 Ollie Osmasrton took the top step with Robert Yates and Oliver Benton tied on points for second and third.

The final round of the championship is on October 4 at FatCat Motoparc.
