Former AMA Supercross/Motocross star Travis Pastrana dominated X Games 12 by winning three Gold medals in Rally Car Racing and Freestyle MotoX - and landed the first ever double-backflip in competition.
Pastrana's dream week started on Wednesday where he competed in the X Games newest sport; Rally Car Racing. After leading the event through the first eight stages, Pastrana slipped 0.1secs behind former World Rally champion Colin McRae with only one more stage set to go on Saturday. Starting second to last on Saturday, Pastrana set a blistering time, forcing McRae to push hard and the Scotsman sensationally rolled his Subaru – handing Travis Gold.
But while all the other rally car drivers were home resting for the final stage on Saturday, Pastrana was at the Staples Center about to make history. Competing in Freestyle Motox Best Trick, Travis was going to attempt a double-backflip.
Never having landed one in competition, Travis was not only risking his ability to participate in the rest of his X Games events, but also his life. However, the freestyle legend was able to land the trick with ease live in front of the screaming crowd. The trick will forever cement Travis' name among the sports most talented riders and is surely among the most amazing stunts ever performed on a motorcycle.
If Pastrana didn't prove to the world that he is the best freestyle motox rider in the world with his double backflip, then his Gold medal winning run in Freestyle Motox should definitely convince the few remaining skeptics. Competing in his last event of the Games, and only thirty minutes after a grueling hour and fifteen minute Supermoto race where he finished ninth, Travis changed gears yet again and hopped on his freestyle bike.
Dropping into the Home Depot Center to the delight of the screaming fans, Travis threw down an amazing run, including a backflip lazy boy, one of only a few athletes to be able to do that. His first run score of 94.2 was good enough for the win and Pastrana ended his X Games with another Gold medal.
"This has been one of the best weeks of my life," said a jubilant Pastrana. "I couldn't have imagined winning three Gold medals in one X Games. I have a great group of people surrounding me and am very fortunate to have been able to compete in four events. Winning three of them is just surreal. I'd rather be lucky than good, and I had a lot of luck on my side with this event."
