Reed wins San Diego, Villopoto crowned.

Chad Reed has claimed his first AMA victory of the 2007 season in San Diego, after taking advantage of a spectacular fall by race and championship leader James Stewart - on a night when Ryan Villopoto also wrapped up his first Supercross Lites crown.

In the Supercross class main event, Suzuki's Ivan Tedesco collected the $1,500 Progressive Direct Holeshot Award, with Reed and the dominant Stewart in close pursuit. By the end of lap one, Reed and Stewart were first and second - where they remained until, after trading positions on lap three, Stewart passed Reed for the lead.

The Kawasaki star held his advantage until lap eight, when he was suddenly kicked off his 450cc four-stroke over the finish line jump - reducing the Floridian to seventh. Yamaha rider Reed, who has been recovering from a shoulder injury, needed no further invitation and rode to his much-needed first win since the World Supercross season-opener, at Toronto last December.

“I love this place,” said Reed. “I have had so many great races here, and this is huge for me. Second place was getting really old. It's a shame to see James crash like that, but this is a big relief for me because I know I can win.”

Stewart recovered to fifth, and still leads both the AMA and World championships, while his team-mate Tim Ferry took second in San Diego, with Honda's Kevin Windham third.

In the West Coast Supercross Lites race, Kawasaki's Christopher Gosselaar took the holeshot with KTM's Martin Davalos in second - but Villopoto was in the lead by lap two and went on to ride the next 13 laps flawlessly en route to the championship. Yamaha's Jason Lawrence, who had a mid-pack start, blitzed his way through the field to finish in second place. Gosselaar was third.

“I am so ecstatic right now,” said Villopoto. “I had a great start in my heat race, then a great start in the main. My teammate, Christopher Gosselaar was in the lead early on and by lap two I made my way to the lead. This is a great accomplishment for me, and I could not have done it without my family.”

The next round of Amp'd Mobile Supercross takes place on Saturday, February 24, at Atlanta's Georgia Dome.
