Townley: This is payback time...

1 January 1901

Former Motocross world champion Ben Townley claimed his first ever East coast AMA Lites Supercross win in front of 58,000 fans at the Edward Jones Dome in St Louis on Saturday.

The Monster Energy/Pro Circuit/ Kawasaki rider was not the fastest on the night, but took advantage of a holeshot in the final to make a run for it in the 15 lap main event. Team-mate Darcy Lange and championship rival Ryan Dungey both tried to pressure the 22-year-old and - with one lap to go - Lange made a pass to steal the lead, however Townley immediately retaliated to take a breakthrough victory.

"I got the hole-shot and tried to ride my own race," explained an elated Townley, who missed most of last season through injury. "It is new for me riding out front, especially as though I couldn't see what the other guys were doing behind me so I had to put some steady laps in, breathe and try and stay calm. I rode pretty solid for the 15 laps - it wasn't the fastest race I have ever ridden but it was definitely one of the smartest ones. I'm really pumped about this victory and would like to thank my team, sponsors and people behind the scenes who have supported me through the rough times and have never doubted me. This is payback time..."

Townley is now seventh in the championship standings and will be looking to make a further climb towards the front in this weekend's Daytona Supercross.
