Max Nagl took his first MX1 win of the season with a perfect performance in changeable weather conditions during the Grand Prix of France at Ernee on Sunday.

Despite heavy rain showers soaking the circuit at random intervals throughout the day, the Red Bull KTM star won race one by 16 seconds over David Philippaerts and then claimed a 12 second victory over Antonio Cairoli in race two.

The result means that Nagl is now up to third in the world championship standings, 13 points behind Philippaerts and 43 points from Cairoli.

Reigning champion Philippaerts took his Monster Yamaha to second overall on Sunday after a strong recovery ride to fourth following an accident in race two, while fellow Italian Cairoli claimed third despite finishing just seventh in race one.

Red Bull Yamaha team-mate Tanel Leok took fourth in the slippery conditions, with a best race finish of third in moto two, while Mickael Pichon was the highest placed home rider in seventh overall.

The former double 250cc world champion, who has come out of retirement as a super-sub for Honda Martin, was fifth in race one, but stalled his Honda on the opening lap of race two and - after taking an age to restart his engine - mounted a magnificent recovery to claim ninth at the chequered flag.

The home fans had greater reason to cheer in MX2, when home hero Marvin Musquin won both motos to lead an all-French 1-2-3-4 in the overall standings.

Musquin, who has won all four races since his switch from Honda to Red Bull KTM, is now 34 points ahead of countryman Gautier Paulin, who finished fourth overall for Bud Racing Kawasaki at Ernee.

Ranked between Musquin and Paulin at Ernee were Antony Boissiere (second) and Loic Larrieu (third).
