Antonio Cairoli extended his MX1 Motocross World Championship lead to 57 points, a margin in excessive of two race wins, with victory at Kegums in Latvia on Sunday.

The Red Bull Yamaha rider was visibly frustrated at finishing just 0.258sec short of Clement Desalle in race one, but caught the leaders earlier in race two to win by almost six seconds from Monster Yamaha rider Josh Coppins.

But fifth for Desalle was enough to hand the Belgian second on the overall podium, with Coppins one point behind in third after finishing fourth in race one.

KTM's Max Nagl is now second in the world championship after 3-6 race finishes, with reigning world champion David Philippaerts slipping to third with 5-7 results. Philippaerts is now one point behind Nagl and 13 ahead of team-mate Coppins.

Pole position man Ken de Dycker fell after a collision with Desalle in race one, which saw the Teka Suzuki rider remount to finish seventh, before a third place in race two for fifth overall behind Nagl.

In the MX2 races, Rui Goncalves returned to GP winning form with 2-1 race results, although KTM team-mate and world championship leader Marvin Musquin exactly matched the Portuguese rider for points.

Gautier Paulin (3-2) was third for Bud Racing Kawasaki with young German Grand Prix winner Ken Roczen fourth (2-3) but also only due to a worse second moto finish, having scored the same points as Paulin.

Musquin now holds a 49 point lead over Paulin in the world championship, with Goncalves 21 points further back in third.

Five rounds remain before the end of the 2009 season.
