Stewart wins wet Hangtown season opener

22 May 2006

James Stewart has taken victory in a wet opening round of the 2006 AMA Motocross championship, at Hangtown, Sacramento.

The newly crowned World Supercross GP champion took a last gasp victory over Yamaha's Chad Reed in race one, in which reigning champion Ricky Carmichael recovered to third after a first lap fall.

Race two then saw Suzuki mounted Carmichael - competing in what could well be his final full season of competition - take a comfortable victory over Stewart, with Reed third.

But the overall victory went to Stewart, with Carmichael second - ending his unbeaten run - and Reed third. Reed's former team-mate David Vuillemin was best of the rest in fourth.

In the Lites class, KTM's Mike Alessi took overall honours with perfect 1-1 race finishes, while Brett Metcalfe was second and former grand prix rider Andrew Mcfarlane third.
