Reigning AMA Supercross champion Ricky Carmichael has taken his second consecutive win of the 2006 season - after catching and then capitalising on a late race fall by title rival James Stewart - during round three of the series, which marked the second of three visits to Angel Stadium, Anaheim.

Honda's David Vuillemin won the Toyota Holeshot Award at the start of the main event, with Suzuki's Ivan Tedesco in tow and Honda's Jeremy McGrath in third. Tedesco then moved into the lead later on lap 1, but was replaced at the top by Stewart on lap four.

However, within a lap Carmichael was into second position and would chase down the Kawasaki rider for the next 14 laps - until Stewart crashed into a lapped rider with just 2 laps to go. That left Carmichael to claim his second win of the season, while former champion Chad Reed inherited second place in the race ahead of the recovering Stewart.

"It's always good to win but I would have preferred to have beaten James fair and square rather than take the win because he crashed," confessed RC. "I'm more excited about how fun and exciting the race was - that is what we need.

"I had a couple of opportunities to pass James but made a couple of mistakes and left it pretty late - when he went down, I thought we were only 10 laps in, not 18..."

"I am sorry that I crashed that way and the race ended," added Anaheim I winner Stewart. "It was a good clean race, and we have one more stop in Anaheim, so that will be my next chance to get a win in front of these fans."

Carmichael now holds a four-point advantage in the Amp'd Mobile AMA Supercross series over nearest rival Reed, but trails Stewart by one point in the World Supercross Series after five rounds.

In the AMA Supercross Lites class, KTM's Mike Alessi claimed the Toyota Holeshot Award while Kawasaki's Grant Langston and Anaheim 1 winner Andrew Short traded places for the number two position.

Langston outlasted Short in the dual, then passed Alessi for the lead on lap 2 and stayed there until the chequered flag. Former 125cc regional Supercross champion Nathan Ramsey settled into third place on lap 3 where he would finish.

"It's always easy when you get a good start," said Langston. "Everything felt right tonight; it all clicked together and this was the easiest race that I have ever won because I felt so comfortable. I was at ease, felt smooth and rode well tonight."
