Townley lifts East Coast crown.

Former Motocross world champion Ben Townley emerged victories from a three-way AMA Supercross Lites East Coast title showdown at Detroit on Saturday.

The Monster Energy/Pro Circuit/Kawasaki rider had pulled back a huge points deficit, after a non-score in round one, to start the event just three points behind Yamaha's Ryan Morais with BT's team-mate Darcy Lange only eight points from the top.

When the gate dropped, Suzuki's Ryan Dungey grabbed the lead in front of Ryan Morais while Townley held fourth. But Morais then stalled his bike, dropping him to twelfth and virtually handing the crown to Townley, who strung together consistent laps to pass Billy Laninovich for second - a position he held at the flag.

With Morais fifth, and Lange just tenth, Townley thus lifted a hard earned first AMA title, by just three points over Morais, in only his first full season.

"This is a dream come true," choked Townley with tears in his eyes. "It's unexplainable - so many emotions, so much hard work and so much blood, sweat and tears have gone into winning this championship - I can't find words to describe it. I've dreamt about this moment since I was kid and to have it come true, with my family, friends and fans here with me, is just awesome."

Meanwhile Dungey's third win of the year placed him fifth in the final points standings: "I am still learning, so I hope to have better luck next year," said Dungey. "I won the holeshot, and I rode a great race after that. I look forward to racing in [the East/West showdown in] Las Vegas in two weeks."

In the premier Supercross class it was business as usual with James Stewart taking his fifth consecutive victory ahead of Chad Reed with Stewart's Kawasaki team-mate Tim Ferry third.

"The first few laps I was out of control," claimed Stewart, who now has one hand on both the AMA and World SX GP crown. "I want to have a good time next weekend in Seattle."
