Lorenzo finishes his 2009 on top at Valencia

Jorge Lorenzo finished his final day of 2009 MotoGP track action on top, with a scorching lap time at the Valencia test.

Lorenzo and Fiat Yamaha team-mate Valentino Rossi continued to work on the new evolution YZR-M1 on day two, as well as doing some laps on their 2009 bikes to compare the new updates.

Lorenzo set his best lap of 1min 31.939sec - almost one-second under the fastest lap in Sunday's race - towards the end of the day and was 0.256secs ahead of nearest rival Casey Stoner (Ducati), quickest on day one of testing.

"I am happy that we are so competitive here with this new version of the bike,” said Lorenzo, who had been just 0.025sec slower than Stoner on day one.

Lorenzo finished his second MotoGP season 45 points behind Rossi, but has gained a welcome psychological boost heading into the long winter break.

“I was able to do some very fast laps and it feels good to be the fastest on the last day of the season," he admitted. "There is a long time now until the next text and it is good for me mentally to know that I was fast today.

"We have worked on some electronics and the suspension, and we have compared the new chassis to the old one and taken a lot of important information for our engineers.

“I am so happy about my season, I've won four races, taken many podiums and finished second in the championship," reflected the #99. "I think this is a great achievement by us and now I would like to wish everyone a good holiday to recover so we all come back in February at the maximum ready to work again."

Reigning seven time MotoGP champion Rossi was 0.333secs behind Stoner and 0.589sec from Lorenzo for third on the timesheets.

The Italian is also happy with the early version of the 2010 M1 but - like the other Yamaha riders - will have to wait until the first test of next year, at Sepang in early February, to try the 2010 engine.

"I am happy about what we have so far with the new evolution of the bike, because it's already faster and already feels better than the old one,” said Rossi. “The throttle is easier to open and I think that Yamaha has done a good job so far. We were quite fast today and I'm happy about the work we have done over these two days.

This "Rossi doesn't go fast in test's so no one knows how fast he really is" is the biggest load of bullsh*t I've ever read.

ANY race bike will work perfectly up to .5 to 1 second of the maximum lap speed the bike is capable of.

That last 1/2 to 1 second the handling of the bike can go from sublime to trying to ride a bag of cats.

These guys have to ride at or near 100% to get any useful data.

The interesting tests will come with the 2010 engines which should be substantially slower.
