125: Redding nominated for BBC award

2008 125cc grand prix rookie Scott Redding has been named as one of the ten finalists for this year's BBC Young Sports Personality of the Year award.

Redding made history in June when he won his home British Grand Prix at his very first attempt. The race was Redding's eighth grand prix start and made the 15-year-old the youngest ever winner of a motorcycle grand prix, as well as the first British rider to win at home since Ian McConnachie in an 80cc race at Silverstone in 1986.

A British rider had never won a grand prix at Donington Park before and Scott's incredible achievement also marked the first grand prix victory by any British rider since Jeremy McWilliams in the 2001 250cc Dutch TT.

Scott finished his debut season with Blusens Aprilia eleventh in the world championship standings, with two fastest race laps also to his credit - the first was set at round one in Qatar and the second on his way to a 5.3sec victory over future world champion Mike di Meglio at Donington.

A panel chaired by BBC Sport presenter John Inverdale met on Monday 10 November to decide on the shortlist of 10.

"I've been involved since the award's inaugural year in 2001," said Inverdale. "This year we've got the highest quality of contenders across the board I've ever known, in my opinion. You are looking at people at the top of their trees, and we have left a lot of strong nominations out of the top 10 and we will now have to leave seven out."

The ten contenders for the award (in alphabetical order) are shown below. 14-year-old Laura Robson, the first British junior Wimbledon singles winner since 1984, is considered among the favourites.

1. Tom Brady (Canoeing)
2. Aaron Cook (Taekwondo)
3. Tom Daley (Diving)
4. Sam Harrison (Cycling)
5. James Peters (Sailing)
6. Scott Redding (Motorsport)
7. Laura Robson (Tennis)
8. Eleanor Simmonds (Swimming)
9. Elizabeth Simmonds (Swimming)
10. Shaunna Thompson (Athletics)

Can he play a piano, should get him into the top 3 easy.

Lets face it, Mr & MRS Daily Mail reader aren't going to vote for someone who rides round on a dangerous smelly motorbike. :)
