Colin Edwards, Ben Spies, Cal Crutchlow, James Toseland... Who do you think should get a shot at joining Jorge Lorenzo?

"What is is that you people don't understand about the Rookie rule. The 9 races is PRIOR to being nominated by a team. After that they have to finish an entire season."

Dray your problem is you think rules aren't meant to be broken. Good for you I'm sure you're an upstanding citizen. But rules are meant to be broken or more specifically changed when it's in your best interest.

Out of respect for Rossi Yamaha will likely keep his bike vacant for the two races as permitted by the rules. For a temp rider Edwards makes sense for his consistency, non-crashing ways and his loyalty to the brand and his past status as a factory rider. Spies will get his chance probably next year if Vale or Lorenzo leave.

Diesel..Dray has made it easy for you to read the rules, please do so..

All your hoping, wishing and damp panties will not get Spies the Fiat ride this year because..It is against the rules.
The rookie rule was brought in this year to stop rookies riding factory bikes in their first year. Spies is a designated Tech3 rider and a rookie till he has taken part in 9 races in the SAME season.

The rule maybe daft and the MSMA who make the rules could change the definition of a 'rookie'..which seeing as they only introduced it this year, would make them look foolish, but until they do he can't ride Rossis M1..It has nothing to do with Jarvis giving him the nod.

Stop being such a Spies fanboy.

Troy Bayliss won't happen as he's traditionally been a Ducati rider and Biaggi won't happen because he's an Aprilia rider currently in the hunt for a WSB championship but the thought is intriguing Racefan.

Spies should obviously get the ride.

The entire reason Yamaha hired Spies was to eventually join the factory team as Rossi ages out/jumps ship or Lorenzo jumps ship.

Putting another rider on that bike means Spies isn't getting the proper training he needs this year. It also means Yamaha would be wasting money hiring a 'temp' rider which they have zero interest in doing.

Yamaha needs to see how Spies performs on the factory bike and with a better team/experienced crew chief and whether or not he will be more successful.

This is the PERFECT opportunity to gauge if Yamaha will bump him up to factory machinery next season.

JT needs to sub. Spies is contracted to Tech3 but has the rookie rule. Colin would do, but he's having his own issues with "feel" and why change Rossi's bike for Colin. There are a few guys that qualify, but JT knows the ride and can be an acceptable sub.

Teams must make every reasonable effort to provide a qualified substitute rider to fulfil their entry obligations. However no substitution or replacement of the entered rider may be made after 10H30 on the first day of practice except in the MotoGP class when the limit is 2 hours before the qualifying practice

1.11.4 If a team is unable to provide a substitute rider, then IRTA may decide to allow another team to enter a rider, on an event by event basis, to reach the required number of entries. Article 1.10.1 will apply to all replacement and substitute riders.

Fiat Yamaha cannot "dilly dally" about this or they could lose the spot to another Team as stated by the rules.

Once Spies has been on the factory bike and team for at least a few races, we'll see his improvement.

I don't think he'll be fighting for wins just yet, but if he gets that bike for the rest of the season, perhaps on tracks he's familiar with and with more seat time, he can battle for a W.

If his performance doesn't noticeably improve over his satellite bike performance, then Yamaha may not bump him up to a factory team. There may not be a slot open and they may not want to spend the extra money for a 3rd factory team.

Either way, I say put Spies on that bike now and til end of season, and keep Rossi out the rest of the season to let him heal properly.
