I have always rated Melandri very highly as a rider but he seems to not have a clue how to get a bike set up for him. He seems to have wandered up a succession of blind alleys, perhaps he is just no good at explaining himself?

It would be interesting to hear Simoncelli's take on the bike. They are both right together on points but Simon is a rookie and Melandri certainly should have the advantage in set up.

aeolus, Simoncelli has a factory RCV (split front air intake) while Melandri has a sat spec RCV, like Randy de Puniet and Aoyama. Furthermore, SImoncelli sticks to the Ohlins suspensions while Melandri switched back to Showa. All in all, I doubt comparisons are relevant. For me it's all done and dusted: Dovizioso and Simoncelli at Gresini with factory RCVs, and Melandri at BMW with Corser in WSB in 2011, and possibly back in Moto1 in 2012 with the German factory.

I think that Melandri can ride the wheels of a well setup bike, but there's the catch it has to be a bike well developed by someone else as he's incapable of developing a bike to suit his riding style.

Melandri, turn off the traction control and ride the rails off that thing, like you did before the 800cc bikes - girly bikes, never liked them.... too bad he wont be on the 1000+cc bikes to show once again his potential.

I think a clue to Melandri's problem is the statement that he is unable to adapt the bike to his style of riding....It seems that he is very fast when the bike suits him, i:e the 990 but even that wasn't consistent.
I have always thought that the hallmark of great riders is their ability to adapt their style to suit the bike or conditions

well you say that melandri is not capable of developing a bike, and that's probably true... but true is also that melandri never had to develope a bike, because has never been a first ride of a factory team, so he never had the chance to develope a bike.
but true also is that he seems to have big problems in adapting his riding style to different bikes...

The best upgrade that Melandri needs to improve his riding is a mirror...

I don't think he has ever taken responsibility for any of his shortcomings, its always the bike...
