MotoGP » Pressure increases on Australian GP date change

The Australian Grand Prix could be moved from Phillip Island, or scrapped altogether, if a solution to a proposed date change is not found.

Does anyone remember the WSBK race a few years ago that was cancelled, in March, due to a flooded PI circuit?

The worry with PI is that the weather there is always a lottery.

On another note, as an Aussie, I look forward to the day that we can get some serious investment into not only the circuits we currently have, but also to build new circuits. I cant understand why they continue to waste money on temporary street circuits! F1 is on a public road, Eastern Creek in NSW is mainly used for club days. Even the V8 Supercars close down the streets of Homebush and build grandstands and a huge pit complex, and then dismantle it all the day after the race. Bathurst is a public road too!

When I see all these new circuits popping up, or I see Silverstone, Imola etc all getting a facelift, I cant help but worry that motor racing in this country is on a down hill slope.

I'm not sure changing the date will guarantee better weather for the GP. They say in Victoria '4 seasons in a day'
In the last 3 years I've been saturated riding down to the track in February and drowned riding to the track in October.(Not every trip)
It can be a little colder in October but Bass Straight can produce cold, wet and windy conditions at any time of the year!
I don't think they could do a straight swap of dates as mid October is when WSB finishes. Neither competition seems to want to finish their season so far from their main fan base in Europe!
For the locals in Cowes they have about 2 to 3 times the number of visitors to the island for MotoGP, which obviously is better financially before Xmas.
While the track is good I agree they should put a concrete footpath around the track for the patrons!

typical dictators, these bosses of motorsports.all worried about the almighty dollar, they dont give a damm, about shafting the aussies, espeleta or whoever he is. gets the top prize, blaming the weather, the f1 boss is runner up,for demanding the f1 race ,to be run at night so more europeans, can watch it,so the dollar comes first, followed by the minority of complaints by the riders. A couple of them have been overthrown lately, maybe it is time another couple, get the same treatment.cheers

Have to agree with you. We hear about the closing of tracks when they become more profitable for developers, but I haven't heard about any opening!

There was talk last year about building a new track on the NSW Central Coast, but something killed that!

@ Andy.
Your still doubting that Motor sport complexes are on the downturn?
Since I was a kid, Warwick Farm, Catalina Park, Amaroo Park and Oran Park have all been closed down. And that's only in N.S.W. The only reason Eastern Creek was built was to win the Moto GP from Victoria. State rivalry (and $$$$), not cause they cared about the motor racing fans in this state. The annual pilgrimage up to MT Panorama for the Easter bike GP has also fallen by the wayside as well. We (motorcyclists) are 2nd rate citizens in this state, so don't hold your breath waiting for something positive to happen for us. Even the way the public had to walk through the ankle deep mud last year (and previous years)at Phillip Island proves how they treat us with contempt. Surely one of the riches men in Australia (owner of PI) could have forked out a couple of grand to truck some bark or road-base in, for the highly congested walkways. It certainly was disgracefull. Better stop now, starting to ramble.

So they get a bit wet and their hair gets mucked up. Are these people motorcycle racers or models? All of the moaning that's going on from you people. Unbelievable. "I got wet socks walking around the motorcycle track". Well wear gum boots. Dress appropriately. "It's too cold and wet": put a jumper on and a poncho. How many races have been canceled? Rossi has never liked PI and has been consistently saying that. Just about every other rider on the track loves PI and looks forward to going there except him. Now he is in a position to do some thing about him not riding there and using safety as a reason. What about Laguna Saga?

No I'm not bashing Rossi for the sake of it. He has said he doesn't like it in at track interviews and on television interviews. I've never seen him say it in a written interview. Loris Caparossi is the same. This has been a big concern because the political clout that Rossi has is considerable. Until recently he used to win there but he didn't like the track.
