They really are serious this year.

Good to see them acknowledge their riders as a part of their success.

Also, an interesting bit of info about Aoyama running the conventional transmission. I wonder what else on his bike is not up to full and current factory spec. Very impressive Aoyama!

He seems to give the nod to Lorenzo over Spies over race distance.

A: maybe - the problem is that nobody in Europe wants to watch a Japanese rider beat one of their own. Even most of east Asia would rather see a European win over a Japanese rider. Our marketing research has indicated that this could hurt global sales...

speaking of Hiro time vs Simo, is it safe to assume transmission is worth 1/3 sec per lap?

not safe to assume at all. the satellite RCV212V has always been a very different bike to the factory bike and the ICG gearbox is only one of many differences. They are actually visibly different too: the factory bike is recognisable by 2 "nostrils" whereas the sat bike has one single air intake.

It has always been practice for the sat bikes to be a lower spec or previous years factory bikes in some cases. Sic only gets a factory bike as he is employed directly by Honda who have placed him in a sat team for now.

p.s. The recent rumour that Aoyama is now on a factory bike seems to have come from people misunderstanding a quote from Fausto Gresini on GPOne that Gresini Honda is now a full factory team. What he meant was the team is much closer to Honda now and gets access to more data etc. He never stated Aoyama now had a factory bike, but it was easy to misinterpret.

speaking as a "european", it would be great to see a Japanese rider come good in the near future, theyve had some real sh!tty losses in the past decade.
Be nice to see their hard work and devotion pay off!

I think some people are getting carried away with how 'new' this bike actually is!
Last years bike was a winner, just a bit slow with the riders at the time until the setup was more useable whereas Stoner has proven he's a master at quick setup and has a wide operating range.
Again, the 2011 bike is hardly a quantum leap from it's predecessor. Everybody loves to hate Honda, but they are what the rest aim to be! Anyway ducati are doing there very best to take home the 'most disliked' for '11, judging by the general consensus of most motoGP discussions.

here is some math on ICG impact: Losail has 16 turns. With ~3 upshifts per corner you get ~48 upshifts. Assuming non ICG bikes set up QS with 40ms per upshift they are loosing ~1.9sec worth of acceleration. With ~2min laps/50% acceleration time this would translate into ~.8-1sec per lap.

Since we only see 1/3 sec, does it mean that Hiro is actually faster? Simo is not pushing? Sat spec bike is better in some areas so it is apples vs oranges?
