MotoGP » Doohan: You get ten years at the top

"I'm not saying that Rossi's career is over, but it's not a downhill ride any more, I think he's at the bottom of the slope" - Mick Doohan.

I am not trying to degrade Doohan, not the least, I know about his achievements and his hardships very well. Doohan was racing against the rest from 1989 -onwards and his crash at Assen or the tyres (which Michelin had much improved from 1992-onwards) can not alone be held responsible for the fact that he managed a championship only in 1994, a full 5 years after he first appeared to the scene. Compare that with 2 years for Rossi, 3 years for Lorenzo, 2 (or 3? don't remember how long he'd ridden that satellite Honda) for Stoner...

My point is that he was, indeed, truly awesome but I can't agree he was clearly better than Rainey or Schwantz (in speed since Schwantz was lacking in cool-headedness) or that he would be clearly better than Lorenzo, Rossi or Stoner, were these chaps racing during the 90's. These are very big "ifs" we are discussing about and claims like "Doohan is the best of all" are very fragile as they are equally fragile in claiming that Rossi is the "goat".

I don't think you can really compare riders from different eras. So much changes that it isn't really possible to say who is better than who! Look at all the electronics these days, maybe riders from Doohan's days wouldn't have coped so well and vice versa, riders these days rely a lot on rider aides so how do you compare?? I actually think electronics have ruined racing to a certain extent and riders like Valentino Rossi, who was brilliant on the monsterous 500's, have their abilities curtailed when aides kick in and take over. The races in Doohans days where far more entertaining as it was all about the rider's skills and I much prefer them to those we see now, but that's the way it goes I suppose. Electronics have to stop somewhere surely????

What Doohan said is just a plain reality that everyone who has a clear head understood it and know already. But when it come from a GP legend, it has more weight.

The yellow brigade still struggle to get it when they has not even get over with their puberty yet.

You rossi haters are so predictable any time the so called experts like MD,or WG,to name just two have something GOOD to say about Rossi they should just shut up.Put when they say something negative about Rossi then and only then they know what there talking about. You guys are beyond funny, then you say that Rossi fans are looking through yellow tinted glasses, then i say you guys are looking through all but yellow tinted glasses. This year i guess its orange tinted glasses who nows what colour you bandwagon jumpers will be looking through next year, but please pick 1.Rossi fans do.
