@Rogerio

Dude, you've got to stop living in the real world! The whole idea of "bike development skills" (ie the province of engineers at the factory who exercise their technical skills after analysis of telemetry and feedback from riders) being something to do with the genius of certain riders is critical to the mythology of MotoGP.

Once you enter this marvelous mythological realm, adverse race results for your hero don't really count anymore - because riders who kick your hero's butt on the race track don't have what really counts - which is "bike development skills".

Get with the program!

@Dr Kev Orkian
Yes I laugh each time I see that "development skills" comment.
A riders job is to ride and get the most out of a given package plus provide feedback that can be compared to data collected.

It is the engineers job to interpret the feedback and data then provide a solution for any given problem.

If the rider becomes to involved with this process his track performance must surely suffer.

Is this what we are seeing with the lead Ducati rider at this MGP?

Well Darkwaknight, if you are still out there...

Looks like I need to give you an 'out' on our double or nothing bet. Your boy Cal just crashed and injured himself, not that he was ever going to get a pole and two podiums. Sad to say the Brit fans put too much pressure on him this weekend, much as they did to JT.

So, about that beer you owe me from last year when you said Spies wouldn't be rookie of the year and JT was going to win the WSBK Championship...

Rodrigo that is exactly it. Fans make the riders out to be experts in engineering and electronics. Practicing a track on X-Box does not make you an engineer. Riders give feedback to engineers who work that and the data captured to come up with settings that fit the riders style and preference. The rider can have problems if they do not give proper feedback or it contradicts the data or they are unable to ride around problems (I give Rossi credit here because he always moves forward in the race and tries to get the most out of the package.)

Riders are incredibly skilled at riding and have dozens if not hundreds of engineers working to give them the best package. Honda seems to have hit the mark and it was genius hiring some of Stoner's crew before bringing him on board to get the Honda ready for him. They are the guys that had the bike set up to a point where Casey could ride five laps and say its a little soft in the downhill section, the laptop gets plugged in and Casey goes

... out again to try it. That's also why Honda is OK with 4 factory bikes, more data to get things 98% there before the rider puts a wheel on track. Honda is not playing around this year.

On the other side Ducati bent over backwards on winter break to give Vale what he needed after the Valencia test and it took him a practice session to say no thanks, give that to Nicky I will stay with the old bike...Now the old data isn't helpful, they have multiple different spec bikes on the grid with mostly new riders on board and the guy leading the "Development" hasn't been happy with his own handywork. Ducati is lost and needs continuity to move forward.

@ BillAce

Finally someone has said what I have been trying to put into words in my head but obviously failed.
THANK YOU !!! BillAce, bringing a complex Idea, the "Big picture" to this site.
As near as I can figure it, the truest, real overview of what is probably really going on. Nice opinion. THANKS.

re: "From all the comments, I believed claims were for occasionaly capable Spies to win a race last year and be champ this year?"

not as long as we have 5 spanish round and lorenzo has a #1 plate to defend.
