re: "Yamaha have a good sponsor in petronas that is still there".

yup still a SUB sponsor, not a main sponsor. yamaha currently floats off the fortunes gleaned from the FIAT/rossi era.

re: "repsol is still there with honda"

SHOCKER...

re: "marlboro are still there with Ducati."

marlboro has downgraded to SUB sponsor status. the name was changed to simply DUCATI TEAM a few years back. tim, generali are subs. AMG who was THOUGHT to be coming in as a main sponsor is also a mere sub. turns out you need a magnifying glass to find that logo on the GP11's. :(

re: "The show will go on after Rossi".

"the show" won't be motogp, but glorified production kit called moto-1. this, because there's no new sponsor money coming in to replace all that has "hemmorraged" over the years. meanwhile in the background, inflation continues to make sure everything gets MORE expensive, not less expensive.

re: "sponsorhip pre rossi were mainly smoke companies, do these names ring a bell, Lucky Strike Yamaha, Rothmans Honda, Marlboro etc etc."

does it ring a bell that "fags" like west, camel, gaulioses, and their MAIN sponsoring money have left and not been replaced with equivalent or greater...? it's the year 2011, not 1990, a gallon of gas can't be bought for .89 cents.

re: "The problem wit this bike is it's L4 engine layout. The engine has to be set further back in the frame so the front bank cylinder heads clear the front wheel."

and this condition would be different for the L-twin checa's successfully campaigning how...?

re: "AMG..... H E L P ....."

they said, don't call us, were just SUB sponsors and have no incentive to increase our support. based on what we're seeing...? don't be surprised if we don't renew our sponsorship. BMW can take their motorrad division and CRAM IT...!

@ shamarone

The Ducati Superbikes have the same issues, they don't turn in quickly and lack front end grip compared to the others, however the Ducati has many other advantages, being a twin with a friendlier power delivery which allows the tires to last a race distance, and much more torque (1200cc) to accelerate out of corners. When Honda decided to build a Ducati beater twin (RC51)which was also a 90deg twin, but a V rather than an L with much better weight distribution, and they beat Ducati.
The Ducati MotoGP bike does not have those same advantages as their superbike does, being an 800cc 4cycl just like the others, any deficiency is magnified.

It's interesting that the new 1199 Superbike will have a reconfigured engine with cylinders rotated back engine moved forward and longer swingarm. They know the disadvantage of the L twin and are correcting it. I don't know why they aren't doing the same with their MotoGP bike.

re: "Its amazing how quick people forget about how good you were."

the phrase you're looking for is known as "familiarity breeds contempt" (google it if need be). not amazing at all, but a VERY predictable human short-coming we've seen play out thousands of times through recorded history... and across all endeavours (not that motorcycling is special). however, WHY this self-destructive flaw seems especially "hightened" or "increased" in motorcyclists is beyond me? in my years, i've NEVER seen a race, creed, sect, or group MORE hell bent on cutting off their nose in-spite of their face? very bizarre. the only thing i can liken it to is "cannibalism"? we're the 2-wheeled version a uruguayan rugby team crashed in the andes. we eat our own, and quick.

re: "They know the disadvantage of the L twin and are correcting it."

no my point in referencing the L-twin is it's been raced successfully like that for a QUARTER CENTURY. if the layout were inherently bad...? they wouldn't be having an epiphany just NOW in the year 2011...? meaning, the problem has little to do with it being a 90 degree V4. lest we forget, stoner "massacred" everybody in '07 with that same basic configuration (abeit modified now as guintoli commented). i'm afraid a few degrees of rotation about the crank (which is all the SP1 was really) isn't going to suddenly rocket that bike from P12 to P1.

Yes it's been raced successfully for a long time, but against what? They have been racing against Inline 4's who have their own shortcomings as well, mostly to do with power delivery. The only time the Ducati raced against another serious v-twin (RC51) it lost.
If all the bikes in WSBK were 1200cc twins, the L-twin layout would become more of an issue.

A few degrees of rotation would make a huge difference, it would allow the engine to be pushed forward in the chassis, most importantly the crankshaft. Not only would it place more static weight on the front wheel, but a 20 lb crankshaft spinning at 16000 RPM becomes a gyroscope, and where that gyroscope is placed makes a huge difference.

You have to look at this in a proper prospective, these bikes are highly developed with the best riders riding them. A normal rider would think that even the worst GP bike was the best bike they've ever ridden, but put it up against the other GP bikes, with the best riders, pushing them to their limit
