Such a talent, such a loss.

Marco's public persona was by far the most likeable in the MotoGP field and I think the out-pour of public emotion and sympathy lays testimony to this.

God bless and may you rest in peace.

First of all, nice response from the Roberts family.

Second -- The picture makes me wonder if the helmet people are going to make, or have made in the past an analysis of the influence of major hair length and bulk on helmet retention. Having had a bush like Simoncelli's wonderful mane back in the early '70's, I can certainly tell you it seriously affects helmet fit, though I don't know if it would affect retention on modern helmets. Still, I wonder if bushy hair could shift around and effectively form a compliant and "lubricating" interface for the helmet - like a bunch of small soft rollers. I'm certainly not saying Simoncelli would have had a greater chance at avoiding a fatal head injury. It looks like a blow such as he took would be fatal whether the helmet was retained or not. Plus he apparently had other major physical trauma. It's awful. But I wonder if competition riders will take hair length into consideration in the future. The true non-conformists won't, I suspect.

i wondered the same exact thing regarding the hair, ihad long hair too and noticed the same lubricity interface with the lining too. funny but thats one of the first things i thought of after seeing the video replay. in any event, very sad week, very sad indeed.

The issue of helmet fit is a misnomer. Factory riders have their helmets made to measure. They are cleaned, washed - including the lining - and serviced several times each weekend. They are summarily replaced every few races, even if they are not externally/apparently damaged.

Today the world knows this was an AGV helmet. Do you think they would risk their reputation based on a rider's preferred hairstyle?
