MotoGP » Cal Crutchlow's big MotoGP season

With Bradley Smith signed, Cal Crutchlow could be in a straight contest with new Monster Yamaha Tech 3 team-mate Andrea Dovizioso for the other 2013 M1 MotoGP ride.

A good pre season is crucial to Cal's progress. If he starts throwing it up the road he'll end up like JT, bereft of confidence. I think at times last year he showed he was no mug, so he can do it, he just needs to stay in the saddle more. Let's hope he's learned something from 2011 and carries it forward. Go Cal!!!!!

I have to say Cal did a lot better in MotoGP than I thought he would! I had serious doubts about his move, but he proved me wrong I am glad to say. With a year under his belt, more experience and probably more confidence, I hope he can achieve even better things! Looking forward to it.

On the 1000 he'll be just as fast as Dovi and often faster, but in the end it'll come down to who makes least mistakes. Dovi has a good record on that side while Cal doesn't, but I do think he'll be a much more reliable finisher this year, as suggested by the last 6 rounds of 2011. In any event, he'll be much stronger this year.

Btw, beating Dovi isn't necessarily a condition of Crutchlow staying in MotoGP or even securing another year with Tech 3. A successful season from Dovi could see him move to a factory squad (many contracts expire this year), so there are way more scenarios than just Dovi vs Cal for a Tech 3 extension.

Cal showed he had the speed last year in his qualifying performances that he can cut it in MotoGP. He just needs to improve on his race pace consistancy and finish races.

I think his biggest challenge this year is going to be getting a proper race day set up. His troubles getting his bike set up to his liking the last 2 years in WSBK and MotoGP have been documented. Unlike JT and Colin who were closer to his size, Dovi (who also has a classic GP back ground) is a bit smaller so Cal maybe on his own with set up. And unlike Colin, I don't see Dovi taking Cal's bike for a spin to help him set it up. Not that I think it would help considing the size difference.
