I thought they were all testing set ups for the race, isn't that what a free practice is for? Why would you test a set up that was slower than everyone elses? Are Stoner, Lorenzo and Spies doing the wrong thing here? Should we expect them to be down the back with VR 'testing set-ups" if they really want to do well in the race?

Makes sense for Rossi to use this first day to try out new setup, since unlike most weekends after the first practice there is a whole day to make changes rather than a few hours.

Good to see Hayden up there in 3rd and Lorenzo not far off Stoner but the gap between the top two and the rest is far too much.

Flop of the day goes to Pedrosa (Or Rossi if you think he was going all out)

Still a long way to go. Even Stoner is still a second off lap record pace.

I know we've all been waiting a long time for the season to kick off but lets try and not get too hysterical!

The top 5 from last year will be consistent as always come race day & Rossi will undoubtedly overtake half of those that posted better Practice 1 times. I see a 5th place finish for The Doctor and RDP or Colin beating at least one satellite Ducati. They seem to choke midway.

@horse.

The Honda's and Yamaha's are sorted bikes, they dont need to make drastic changes. Its just a suspicion on my part that Rossi is trying some new things they didnt try in tetsing but who knows, maybe he was going all out and he really is 1.5 secs of the pace and a second slower than hayden but its hard to believe considering the results on the last day of testing at sepang.

As everyone was concentrating on Rossi's performance, no one noticed that Stoner didn't dominated head and shoulders this first pratice at Qatar. Remember it is Qatar where Stoner is even better than he uses to. So why did he beat the others by a smidge?
1 - Either he is sandbagging and keeping a cool head, not trying too hard
2 - Or this year his domination will be put in question by the Yamahas...

I think Stoner and Lorenzo will start to open a gap on the field over the next few days.Spies and Pedrosa will tag along with them but the Ducatis will start to struggle with the Honda/Yamaha pace by the end of qualifying.
