there is a big difference between great rivalries and bitter rivalries.
i think todays top three have no ill feelings involved in there rivalry , when they make a hard pass its usually always done clean smooth and very calculated.
you could take a pick of numerous bitter rivalries that have been around , there was plenty , these kind of rivalries can be i would say more exciting to spectators due to the mug tactics that are applied through desperate overtaking and often insulting gestures toward one another.
i think ego playes a big part in bitter rivalries.
both kinds are good to watch in my opinion , the great rivalries for professional execution and genuine respect , and the bitter rivalries for the fair bashing and juicy biatch fights.

@636 stunter.
thats true mate , thats why its always unrealistic to try comparing greatness between riders of past and present
also some of them used to race in other classes on the same day.
its all a pointless futile endless circle.

"There was only 12 races in a season back when doohan schwantz etc were racing, if there had been 18 races then I'm sure their podium stats would have been much higher."

hmmm not only that but the more races probably equals less desperation to win, think about it, if there were only one or two races it would be vital to win every race even 12 races does not leave much room for complacency, but 18 and with so few extra points for a win means some riders settle for a podium and try and win on points. Stoner seems the only one really trying to win all the races

they have tried to milk the championship for all its worth with lots of races and not a lot of points difference for different places and in the process may have lessened the spectacle....

I find the list irrelevant. All it shows is that these riders were consistently better the rest of the grid, which by my definition does not (at least not in itself) a great rivalry make
