MotoGP » Rossi: We've taken a decent step forward

'Today went pretty well, especially in the afternoon. I'm eighth, but the gap to the front is only four tenths, which is a decent step forward for us' - Valentino Rossi

@o0o0o0 If you read it you would see he was on the harder compound tyre while Nicky was on the softer compound. People always comment too often on practice times rather than the actual race. Practice is for setting up the bike and trying out different settings, sometimes this does not show the true pace of the bike. I think it is looking good for Rossi this race, one of his favourite tracks and the bike is not too far from the front. 4 tenths? I can only imagine racing a bike and trying to find 4 tenths...

GPOne has the entire interview.
He is saying they have a better electronics package but still lack mechanical rear grip, the tires overheat and go away after 4 laps.
He also said the bike still understeers but it is the character of the Ducati and understands that. And they are using a new setup that loads the front tire more.
And he said that they are working on race pace and hard tires only at this point.

Rossi cud hav bin mch faster if hed used soft tyre as hayden did .bt it dusnt last longer so he switchd to hard. Tyre stil plays a big role n nw ders a hope dat updates wil make d bike mch beter wid a softer engine . Only yamaha guys njoy d tyres ,none of dem hav complaind yet. Strange bt d m1 is a far beter bike

Rossi did the lap on the back of pedrosa, so pretty much he would have been running a 1.36, maybe a 1.35.8 on his own. He is still struggling pretty bad. I do agree with what some said about his excellent race craft, the guy can dog fight with the best of them. But that darn bike cant turn when the tires go off. I cant see him again with Ducati next year.

@ pcxmac "If you wanna make it fair bring back last year's tires front and REAR"
Would that really make it FAIR, or just mean that Yamaha get penalised for getting their bike working well? Honda's have suffered chatter for a v long time now, certainly a LOT longer than the new tyres have been out (F & R). JL wasn't exactly slow last season on the 800, and anyway with the 1000's it's all new to all teams. If Yamaha have done a better job with the tyres Bridgestone provide to the entire grid, then I fail to see why people insist on this constant bleating about the tyres being 'unfair'. Everyone has the same opportunity - it's not the least bit unfair as far as I can see.

I would point out that all the teams knew the general direction the new tyres would be taking - indeed the consensus from the paddock was that riders welcomed a tyre that warmed up quicker and would acceot the trade-off that would inevitably come with reduced grip later on. All the teams knew this and could anticipate that changes to their bikes set-up and possibly riding styles / tyre management strategies would become a far greater factor in race pace. And (once again) - it's a control tyre, one-make tyre rule - all the teams are getting the same allocation of the same stuff! That seesms pretty straightforward and fair to me! I must be missing something then - please enlighten me!

Just how much of a fan are you . Look at the times again 4/10th off the front and the people at the front set fastest times on soft tyres when People like Lorenzo and Rossi stayed on the Hard. Also even when Rossi was with Yamaha he always did his best performance in the race. It looks like a significant step to me. Proof will come on saturday though and i think it will. By the way even Casey is having problems so obiously todays times could be totally meaningless this time tomorrow. I have total confidence in Valentino getting back to the front .Wether or not it will be on a Ducati only time will tell. Personally i hope it is on a Ducati.
