Lorenzo's immediate reaction to the crash was entirely understandable, passions run high in sport.

But I did think when he calmed down things would work out fine. Alvaro made a mistake, but he put his hands up straight away, apologised, and you can't ask for any more than that. Every racer out there has taken someone out. When you push to the limit, you will make mistakes.

As they say, that's racing. Good on Lorenzo for being man enough to accept it and move on.

Yes a good response from Lorenzo, you can understand him being livid after working so hard to achieve a 25 point lead to have it wiped out in one fell swoop, I'm absolutely gutted for him, but that's racing I guess.

There should be a formal Yellow and Red card system that carries on for 2 seasons or 36 races.

By this suggestion, Bautista would be on a Yellow card for his Valencia 2011 start crash. This would be his second, so now a Red card, back of the grid.

Very unfortunate for Lorenzo but at least he escaped serious injury at a critical point in the season with back to back races. It'll be interesting to see whether he receives any special dispensation for the blown engine. When you have such rules they're bound to have unintended consequences. There needs to be more consistency overall from the governing authority, the FIM. What Bautista did had a big impact on the championship race but was accidental and luckily did not cause serious physical injury, whereas Sofuoglu's behaviour in WSS was intentional. If you deliberately try to knock someone down with your car but through sheer luck happen to miss them, is that less deserving of punishment than accidentally knocking someone down?
