MotoGP » Lorenzo to Ben Spies: Stay calm and focused

“I don't think it's a question of talent or speed... If Ben is focused and calm he can be on the podium and sometimes win” – Jorge Lorenzo.

@ just wondering

I have a couple of insider lines, but not enough reliable info to fill in any of the blanks. I think the true situation here is that nobody really knows what's going to happen in all of this. Ducati is bent in half with internal politics, Yamaha are scared to make a move in case a new sponsorship scenario comes up, and pretty much everybody is stalled waiting for Rossi to decide what he wants. Once VR decides then I expect everything will drop into place soon after.

The sad truth is Houseworth and crew were in over their head even in WSBK. Anyone remember Ben running out of gas on the last lap at Monza? He also had several VERY SIMPLE mechanical issues that cost him results too. These are things that can happen in club racing. They are NOT things that should ever happen on the world stage. By that point, you're supposed to be THE BEST at what you do.

I think Ben needs a new crew. He needs to get out of the gate in FP1 and be fast then, and steadily improving. Most of the time, he's down around 7th or 8th, and finally pulls it together around QP. Ever notice that Jorge is fast right away, every weekend? Yes, he's a phenomenal rider, but he can only ride what his crew gives him, and clearly they give him a better bike than Ben's crew gives him, and it shows, right from the very beginning each race.

If Spies wets the bed at home, I can't support him anymore, Weird how when his momma ain't around he has problems but when she's in the paddock watching him race he's a demon on two wheels. Norman Bates Like creepiness.

ben lately comes off as a guy who does not seem to care that he is sucking as bad as he is. He's always seemed to be like that with his deadpan looks and that slow drawl of his. I want to see him up his game and bring the crazy. If not for himself, at least for Yamaha cause they have invested a lot into him.

JLo will also need help cause dani and casey will be hounding him the rest of the season.

@ Jack "At the beginning of the season, Dovi made a very bold statement saying "I want out of Tech3". Even in the context of wanting to be in a factory team, what team manager wants to hear this from his rider?"

I see your point, but it was always clear that Dovi's ambition was a Factory Yam ride and Tech3 was a means to an end. Cal also has been quite outspoken about needing & wanting a factory ride to challenge for wins as well. However, if that plum Yam seat isn't an option then Tech3 is still a damn good ride right now in MotoGP. As for Herve and Dovi's relationship... well I don't think the Team Manager has to like his rider to want to retain his services when that rider is performing and delivering better results than anyone Tech3 have ever had? Herve could hate the guy yet still want to keep him if its the best thing for his team.

I wonder if anyone remember a certain James Toesland going through a similar spell. Even though he wasn't in the factory team he still got much more abuse etc than Ben Spies is getting now. Infact i remember some of the really abusive remarks from certain corners This should serve to show pople that these guys are only human and although i am not claiming that it is the case with Ben we need to keep in mind that these guys can suffer loss of confidence . As with the rest of us if you keep getting kicked when you're down you try harder to get back then things escalate. I am not saying i have the answers regarding Ben or any other rider just that we need to be less quick to pass judgement. I hope he can turn it round and keep his ride .

@Talentfan
Yes very true the points you make about Dovi and his relationship with Tech3 . From what i gather though from MCN Dovi is off to the BMW WSB team to join up with Melandri in an all Italian team. Apparently he has said he wants to fight for a champioship and he doesn't care if it's Moto GP or WSB as long as it's a world championship. Apparently both he and Hayden are on they're way out of Moto GP to WSB. And that would really open things up in moto GP.

What Ben needs to do more than anything else is stop making excuses and address the biggest problem which is clearly the relationship between him and the bike.

Now maybe he can't make Lorenzo's setup work. Maybe their styles are so different that Ben needs to develop his own setup. Boo hoo! He's had plenty of time on the bike now, he's a professional. He should have it pretty much sorted by now.

There is little doubt that the factory bike is very similar to the Tech 3 bikes, but better. Yet Spies has managed to finish ahead of both Tech 3 bikes only once this season. If he can't learn from Lorenzo and his setup then maybe he can learn from the Tech 3 riders and their setups?
