MotoGP » Can MotoGP ever crack the USA?

The order of motorcycles here in America.
1. Harley Davidson
2. Dirt bikes and ATV's
3. Cruiser bikes
4. Sport bikes , AMA is bigger than Moto GP here.

That's why its hard to get GP going in America, despite our long list of Champions. Also cars are king, and motorcycles are added luxuries.

I made this same point on the Spies retirement news thread. The USA is a large market but Americans generally aren't interested in bikes or road racing in particular, whereas in Spain and Italy everyone rides bikes and you find whole families of race fans. A small piece of a large pie like the US is not worth as much as a large piece of a smaller pie like Spain. It must be frustrating for US riders and GP race fans. A chopper is the antithesis of a race bike, although ironically, it's a stylistic exaggeration of modifications US riders originally made to their Harleys to try to make them competitive with BSAs & Triumphs, increasing the rake and trail to make them wobble less. Like a peacock's tail, the trend's grown out of all proportion through evolution of the fashion. The fact they also tended to remove the front brake, to save weight by removing 'unnecessary' parts indicates a very different approach to riding in a country of endless straight roads.

If you want to make motogp relevant to americans why not make the riders wear fat suits and shoot at each other?
Seriously the manufacturers should do more, gp bikes doing demo laps at nascar and daytona, or entering them in daytona!

eso20 - I don't think there's much point riding a GP bike round a NASCAR oval as a demonstration. As for the other suggestion, of course that's where Sheene had his first really serious accident when the rear tyre of his Suzuki failed at high speed on the banking during the 1975 Daytona 200. Banking is unnatural and unsuitable for proper racing.

If they dont like it so what. they dont like football or cricket either. Let them have all their minority domestic sports they bill as World series etc.
It all sounds like small wee wee syndrome to me.

cmpunk (is that not one of those of funny wrestling type people ?) The guy never said that AMA is bigger than MotoGP, he said it is bigger in the USA than MotoGP. I don't think his statement is unreasonable or wrong.

As much as I hate football it would however be fair to say that in say Germany its domestic league is bigger (more popular) than say Serie A in Italy or the Spanish league but that does not mean that most players there would still aspire to play for Barcelona, Madrid, Inter, Juventus etc.

So the reason that Nicky, Ben and Colin are in Moto GP is because it is still the blue ribbon class in the motorcycling road race world and the one to which more or less all riders aspire.
