MotoGP » Valentino Rossi: It’ll be hard to beat Lorenzo

“The world title is a dream. [We] have to understand if I'm still a top rider, still fast and if I can still fight for the podium. After two seasons like this, nobody knows” - Valentino Rossi.

@ Sid "maybe to expect any kind of humility at such a time in a rider's career is a little bit shortsighted?"
Hmm, maybe (though when that was written VR was not that young or inexperienced in racing terms, nor in the art of PR & the media). What amazed me though was not that VR was arrogant (I expected that), but the sheer amount that made it into print. Rossi must have insisted on approving what content went to print, and must have overruled any editor who must have tried to get the overwhelming volume of 'I'm bloody fantastic and responsible for anything & everything great and the world revolves around me, I love me, and shall we have some more about how great I am' in that awful book. I came away with the feeling that it took a massive ego who believed every ounce of his own press & hyperbole, and gave next to no credit to anyone else but himself. To believe that book presented himself to the world in a good way says bad things about the real VR IMO.

Sid, don't get me wrong - I've watched and enjoyed Rossi's racing career and am not saying he isn't supremely talented. I just don't think he was quite as good as his biggest fans think he was, nor that his successes man as much due to various circumstances as some believe them to. I also admit though that I believe that CS and JL are superior riders.
VR's book left me cold and disappointed - I was left with a feeling that VR was a person that (away from the 'Rossi Media Persona', rather the real VR) was a person I'd find unbearable and loathsome. I wish I'd never read his damned book TBH. It inevitably altered my view of someone I'd far rather have been impressed by.

Great posts Talentfan. I haven't read Rossi's autobiography, however, many reviews are in a similar vein to yours. He obviously believed he was untouchable despite having the best bike, special tyres, very little competition, and thinking he was a development guru at that time. Since Jlo's arrived, and especially since his foray to Duacti (which Stoner wasn't riding hard enough), I'd suggest he's had one enourmous wake up call. Time will tell how he leaves MotoGP.

@ We Shall See. Thank you for the positive comment. It was refreshing to be able to have a discussion with other posters (some like Realist & Sidthekid who don't necessarily share my viewpoint but produced posts that were balanced and considered) without resorting to mud-slinging etc. I respect the right of others to their POV even if I don't necessarily agree with it, and appreciate it when others do likewise.
Given that my posts are not 'pro-Rossi' then I find it even more remarkable - I was expecting to log in this am to find a pile of vitriol & flaming aimed at my posts. A really nice & unexpected change!
