"We were mainly fine-tuning the bike and the results seem good. I'm positive for the rest of the year" - Ben Spies.

If you and your source knew anything about Ben Spies, you'd know that he hates flying, let alone riding in space-ships to planet Tatooine.

I have it on authority that he will be riding (a bicycle) to win back some medals at the Tour de France for Lance Armstrong to have.

"It has been obvious to me that Ben has never been as comfortable/happy at the factory Yamaha team as he was at Tech 3"

Perhaps it was the shock of constantly being beaten by his factory team mate in MotoGP after a career spent being the biggest fish in smaller ponds. Confidence is an essential part of success at this level and when you know that you're riding your hardest and still getting soundly beaten by someone on equal machinery, your ego is likely to suffer. It's then very easy to lose motivation, particularly if beating everyone else is your primary motivation rather than simply enjoying racing for the sheer pleasure of competing.

Can't blame you for being sceptical when it comes to Spies rumours - #11 has thrown more curveballs than most this season when it comes to career moves.

In the case of BMW though, there was good reason to think he might be going there since he signed a pre-contract with them. Even as late as August, BMW Italia boss Serafino Foti was claiming it was "80%" that Spies would be on a BMW. So he was probably more surprised than most when Ben decided not to complete the deal.

One thing is certain: Spies by his own admission has now signed a MotoGP deal for next year and says that the team will be formally announced this week. And if it's with anybody other than the Ducati Junior Team, it'll be his second biggest surprise of the year.
