“We are in the fight for fifth place in the championship with Cal and Alvaro. We are the slowest of the three but we have to try” - Valentino Rossi.

@ gopher

So when Rossi was racing for Honda, Yamaha made their bikes slower so Rossi could have the best bike? And then when Rossi joined Yamaha they made Rossi's bike the best and Honda agreed to slow their bikes down so that Rossi could have the best bike again? Except this time when Rossi moved to Ducati, both Honda and Yamaha decided not to run with their slow bikes!

Give it up and watch F1 instead :p

For Rossi? No

Yamaha did drop the ball and made the first M1 942CC without fuel injection (even though the R7 they had in WSBK was using it). So essentially yes, Yamaha did build a slower bike.

Yamaha initially believed that the speed difference would not be greater than that of the two strokes, so they saw no need to build the machine to the full capacity of 990CC. Instead they built an engine that would fit into thier proven Delta Box frame, instead of building a new Delta Box frame design around a new engine.

Does that answer your question?

"Professing to be wise, they became fools, ..." also look up the word "sarcasm" :? What I'm talking about is the fact that so many people are now saying that Rossi only won his 9 World Championships because he was on the best machinery which is crap. He did have one of the best bikes, granted, but there were other riders on similar machinery. Rossi has talent - period! I'll try not using sarcasm next time so that others can understand better ... oops, that was sarcasm again :p

I heard it from a Colin Edwards interview (after he left the works team), that Valentino had it written into his contract that he would get the 'extra' bits that his team mate wouldn't. Colin stated that he actually saw this in Rossi's contract.

But not taking anything away from Valentino, after all, he still had to ride the bike to such a level and beat everyone else.

To any doubters, I can give the relevant youtube/bitorrent links.
