1.1off is identical to the first day Dani tested the RCV in 2005 and he missed the second day due to rain so from that MM is exactly as expected.

Dani then went on to finish a close second in Jerez (although it may have been 3rd as Sete had a Gear lever fall off or something stupid). And he won 2 races and got umpteen podiums.

Difference is back then the gap was to maybe 1-3 riders who would always win (Rossi,Capex,Melandri,..ahem Hayden) and Dani would not have been pushing for a lap time yesterday (he was 2 seconds of his own pole 3 days before) so 1.1 is hardly amazing.

In comparison Stoner missed all pre-season in 2006 and he rolled up and was less than a second of pole in the first FP (Capex) and that was a very Satellite Honda.

So far I would say MM has done ok, alot left to prove and he will have a Jorge year IMHOP?

So we are going to judge this kids entire moto GP career off of his first test on a brand new bike with brand new tires in less than ideal conditions?

This place is amazing.

Nothing special with 1 sec behind. Except he proves us this kid could "ride" MotoGP and improving his time lap by lap. How good he quickly learn the bike. He proved us his potential. I bet he could do better, but "he & his team" made any decision to do this step by step with safety first.
Anyway this kid is amazing, can't wait to see him mastering RCV213.

I was at the race on Sunday and also the test yesterday. What Marc achieved on both days was truly amazing. Yesterday the track never fully dried so to be doing those times with slick tyres on the first time you have ridden the bike was a joy to see. Another point, although he doesn't seem to have many supporters on crash net, both on race day and yesterday, there was huge crowds, a section of the stands for Marquez fans. There were 300 people there for testing, everybody was there for him.

I suspect that MM will be fine.. he is obviously talented and he is fast and he knows 98% of the tracks. I like this guy because he strikes me as a racer not a time trials type.. but like many on here i believe he will get a few podiums and maybe a win or two but I cannot say I believe he will battle for the title, 3rd or 4th and that will be hard with Rossi, Stephan Bradl, and Bautista fighting for that spot especially with Bradl on factory equipment as well.
I am a Rossi fan but just unsure what he will do this coming year, in terms of title challenge... my money is more on next (2014) season for a title bid. I think he will win a couple this year and multiple podiums but title? against an inform Pedrosa and JL might be too big an ask particularly as he may not hit his stride until about 6 or so races in, which might leave him too far behind for a title bid...

those last few tenths thats where fortune begins to favour the brave. what is interesting is yes dani came on form of late, stoner was there at the start but lorenzo was always there, never really being challeneged i think MM is the one to do that to put jlo (and the others) under the kind of pressure that will make them in turn go faster.
we can all only specualte one thing though 2013 is very looking very good.

Omg crash this is hilarious! Get your facts straight pls!

"Marquez working his best time down to an impressive 1min 33.403secs seventh overall and just 1.1secs slower than Pedrosa's lap record-breaking effort."

The record braking laptime was 1m 30.844s which is not 1.1s from MM.

@ponty crash were referring to danis time which broke the best race lap, which isn't necessarily the overall record. It was just to highlight marquez was very much at the sharp end.

I'd agree with some people that if he was only a couple of tenths slower, it would be a bit disappointing, but he's just going to keep getting better and better.
