What will be the minimum needed for Valentino Rossi to consider the 2013 MotoGP World Championship season a success?

Rossi only has 3 opponents on comparable machinery, and one of those is a rookie. So 4th means 'loser' on a factory Yamaha and (probably) doesn't justify Rossi having that ride. VR has to beat at least one of the other 3 factory bikes more Sundays than not to be considered half-decent (just ask Ben Spies!).
But even without CS in 2013, VR has to contend with JL & DP (with MM an unknown factor) - and those guys are decent competition for anyone.
If we based our decision on the rabid nonsense of the Yellow Taliban (i.e. that Vale is so much better than anyone else) then anything less than a WC would be a catastrophic failure.
However, here on planet Earth I'd say that coming 3rd in the WC, while being truly on front-running pace and competing strongly and consistently up front, with several top 2 finishes would go a long way to justifying his position and proving he deserves the ride on merit IMO

One of the best posts I've seen on here, be interesting to see how long it'll be before the Rossi Taliban (hehe) start attacking Marquez because he's not as fun as Rossi (too fast) Pedrosa cos he's to dull (too fast) and Lorenzo cos the bike was designed around him (too fast)
Realistically he MUST get at least 3 wins to not be a failure and podium in nearly all.

Blue Hurricane you made a good point in that next year the top contender will probably be Pedrosa not Lorenzo but he'll definitely try to fight Rossi to be #1 Yamaha. It should be an interesting season if Rossi can get comfortable on the bike and be a contender from the start.

yeah, if Pedro keeps up that speed and aggresion on the bike, aaand does not insure himself during preseason, aaaand Honda keeps that slidee edge over Yammi than I can see him romping it next year.

JL and VR I think will be closly matched with JL maybe the edge at the beginning of the season.

MM - who knows.

At this point I am hoping they all stay healthy so there is no drama before the season starts.

Err... you can be an insect around the fire if you want. We'll stick to watching the racing.

Interesting that quite a few Rossi fans are already qualifying their predictions with excuses....getting old, injuries, not the number one rider, the ducati affected him, etc. Those excused don't cut it, his 34 and the greatest ever, he should win, no question. For those Rossi fans that steadfastly say he will win and be world champion again, I commend you! I'll be rooting for him to win it all, that would be pretty amazing.

Unfortunately the odds are really stacked against Rossi. He will be lucky to win even one race. If you look at the last 5 years since Jorge arrived, race wins looks like this.
Stoner 28 wins, Lorenzo 21, Pedrosa 18, and Rossi 16. Rossi won 2 world titles in this period 2008, and 2009.
He was at his peak in 2008 when he won 9 races. In 2010 he won only one race on the Yamaha, Jorge took 9 wins and the championship. Rossi hasn't won since.
On current form, both Dani(7 wins this year) and Jorge 6 are both on the top of their game. Rossi will be fighting Marquez, Bradl and Crutchlow for 3rd place on the podium i'm afraid.

@RG500 even with Stoner gone it certainly seems like the competition has raised the bar since Rossi last won, can he lift his game to meet the challenge of the way DP and JL are riding? well maybe, but his performance on the Ducati suggests otherwise.
