If he can't keep up with them, he has no option but to settle, there'll be nowhere to hide and the whole world will be watching. But I don't see why Rossi shouldn't be able to be in the top three, he's older but not that old, he's not injured, he likes the Yamaha and will be hungry for wins to restore his pride, so who knows. I reckon his personal target will be to beat Lorenzo but I think the Hondas will be much stronger than the Yamahas next year and Lorenzo may crash his way out of the championship trying to keep up with Dani. From the moment Dani started putting pressure on him this year, Lorenzo almost crashed in Misano, Aragon, Sepang and actually crashed in Valencia, the only race where he didn't want to settle for second. Then he also crashed during testing in Aragon so didn't end the season on a high note. If Rossi is able to be there with them then Lorenzo's going to have double the pressure, or triple if Marquez gets in there too , who knows. I guess we have to wait after t

Success will be getting halfway through the season without mouthing off about how he's not getting the support he thought he signed up for as an excuse to why Jorge his kicking his butt.

For Rossi and his fans to consider the 2013 season a 'success' he needs to be competeing for the podium at nearly every race. Being beaten by Lorenzo and Pedrosa on his first season back at Yamaha can't honestly be viewed as a 'failure'....these two are currently the best riders on the planet (I would include Stoner but he's gone fishing !!) However I would regard being beaten by Marquez in his first year in MotoGP as a 'failure' for Rossi, don't get me wrong I think Marquez will give Rossi some serious competition for podiums once he's learned to master the Honda, and I would also consider being beaten by Crutchlow or Dovi as also 'failures'....As much as I like Rossi, I just can't see him winning the title this year as Dani and Jorge will be too strong...........UNLESS, they start tangling with each other (ie. DNF's or injuries) and Rossi is lucky enough to remain uninjured and racks up consistant podium points.......

For someone who has won 9 Titles, I would think success is a victory not just a podium finish. As one of the greatest riders (Mick Doohan) said "Second place is just FIRST of the LOSERS" so by getting on the two lower steps of the podium should be considered as Failure. A great philosopher once said "There's no success like failure, and failure's no success at all". Think about it. It's so true.. So there you have it FAILURE IS,... NO SUCCESS AT ALL

Who really cares what Mick has to say? How many titles did he win? That's right, not anywhere near as many as Vale has. Also, Ago, while great, had a crazy advantage machinery-wise & rode in 2 classes simultaneously. Nowadays, the first 10 guys are spread out over very smallest margins of time, even considering the Ducati. The modern bikes ride on the razors edge of the limit of what's possible given the laws of physics. Vale is the GOAT. Still, every rider has a peak. Until we wait & see, nobody knows. A little harsh for the haters to state he has to win titles for another 15 years to earn his namesake. Success has different meanings for different stages in one's life/career.

If he stays consistent and doesn't crash a lot or get hurt... 3rd in the Championship with 1-3 victories is a safe bet. Glad he is back on the M1, being the most successful Ducati GP rider for the last two years shows he still has ability at his age but he belongs on the Yamaha. I think the upcoming battles with MM will be great to watch, old-school vs new-school.
