"It was a big relief, because after two seasons like this you have a lot of question marks, a lot of doubt" - Valentino Rossi.

"VR's bike could run 4th with my Mum on it Posted by TalentFan"
It isn't quite VR46's bike yet - it is still mainly Ben's Pies' bike, but I don't doubt your Ma is a fast lady, and last season she probably could have outrun Ben, partly due to Ben carrying Mrs Pie's weight on his back.
In this session VR was in reality on someone else's bike, but when Vale he gets the M1 tweaked to his liking it is inevitable that we will see his times tumble.
I think 2013 will be one of the closest ever seasons, with interest and entertainment all the way.
Bring it on !

@ The Joker "I'll ask you this how long have you watched racing? that's one, and please give me the name of one racer on any form of racing that won a championship with inferior machinery"

There are those that could argue that Senna put in some truly special performances on 2nd string kit. Also Mike Hailwood maybe?

In truth your point is valid. These days the equipment is SO refined and tailored to the Nth degree that there is no longer a margin for Super-talented Pilots to exploit.

Which keeps it coming back to the same thing - we'll NEVER have great racing until the technology and the cheque-books are forced to play 2nd fiddle to the Riding Talent. If things go on like they are, then I'll say it now that Ducati WILL pull out of MotoGP, and NO OTHER Mfr's will enter works teams.

MotoGP has to change focus and adapt, or die. the path HRC & factory yam keep on forcing will KILL the sport. I don't want to be able to say " I told you so" in a season or 2.

@ Tetley

Thing is - Ben's Pies god-awful 2012 season was really just 'the exception that proved the rule' and skewed the results. If normal service on a Factory M1 had been the case, then Dovi and Cal (or anyone else) wouldn't have been able to get on the box in a (esp. dry)event.

We can't expect a HRC or Yam factory pilot to have a 'mare season like that again - just won't happen. It'd take a big injury realistically (& then a replacement rider would get the chance, & the superiority of the factory bike new guy got would restore the status quo even then).

Like a lot of other folks on here its good to see Rossi being fast, near the front and smiling. Like him or not, everyone that's apart of MotoGP and or follows the series, knows that having Vale at the sharp in helps build the sport's interest. He's a great champion, ambassador and personality which every sport needs. It's no different in the States with Tiger Woods. You may hate things about him, but with him in contention of any tournament brings tv ratings up and lots of interest to the sport. The same with Federer in tennis. However we shouldn't get to ahead because like with other sports, the season is long and you never know what might happen. Who thought Casey would get injured or Ben Spies, after leading the testing times on day 2 last year would have such a disaster of a year. Let it ride folks and like all of you, I'm hoping for a cracker of a season!!!!

I dont understand why anyone would doubt that vale could be so fast, lets face it,the bike was the only one last year that could take it to the hondas and rossi is the greatest rider currently in moto gp(stats=fact not speculation)
@talentfan,i have to agree mate, the way things are going my beloved prototypes will be gone in a season or two!
When vale made his statement that the difference was the rider, not the bike it was fact!
Trouble is,with the fuel limit, control tyres ,electronics and other build restrictions, race engineers are so backed into a corner that the slightest edge in tech will win the race.
Bring back the full on monster 1000s with a sensible fuel limit and proper tyres, that was two wheeled entertainment at its second best(two strokes were the best)
Hope next season is better than the last six!
