Obviously the bike plays a big role and this can be seen in the fact that the Yamaha and Honda factory teams have won all bar one of the post 500cc WCs. But you also need talented, experienced and consistent riders and Pedrosa, Lorenzo and Rossi just have these attributes. The last rider to chalenge the domination of the factory teams was Simoncelli but he lacked consistency which would have come with experience. The reason why Valentino is on a factory ride are the above but he is also charismatic and, to most people, likable and therefore an asset to the sport.

The Ducati was a great bike in 2006 and a absolute missile in 2007, if Rossi had been on either of those Ducatis I really believe he could of won the championship on a Duke especially in 2006. He took on the Ducati at its worst. even Lorenzo or Pedrossa would of struggled.

Doohan won 5 in a row on the Honda 94-98

Rossi took over and won 5 in a row 2001 - 2005.

then another 2 years in 2008 and 2009

So I guess dominated for 5 years then came back and won another 2, which is a great effort.

But didn't really dominate the sport for 16 years.
