MotoGP » Crutchlow: I could have been fastest

'although I was only sixth quickest today I actually think I could have been fastest' - Cal Crutchlow

In my opinion its all down to experience. I seem to remember a certain Valentino Rossi and Jorge Lorenzo both launching it to the moon on regular occasions in their early years in the premier class and don't even mention Dani Pedrosa taking Nicki Hayden out in 2006. Watch Marquez this year, he'll be a regular visitor to the gravel traps. If Crutchlow wasn't dropping it on occasion it would tell me that he wasn't on the limit. Its called a learning curve and Crutchlow's is still on an upward trend which is not something you can say about Dovisioso. He's flatlined over the last few years. If Crutchlow doesnt get 6 or 7 podiums this year then you can have a dig but until then wait and see.

I like Crutchlow but he should really try to stop talking himself up and then not deliver. As most mentioned, he is fast over a lap and gives good entertainment in the races but realistically Japanese satellite machines should naturally place 5th to 8th, so Dovi finished above his station and Cal near bottom.

For me there is no argument on who performed in 2012. Cal is no rookie so he should not be happy with anything less than 5th place in WC 2013.

The reason Cal crashes so much is he wants to win and battle the guys at the front , he clearly has the pace but the machinery isn't up to the satellite Hondas and Yams hence he pushes over the limit we all realise 5th is the best he should do but he wants more! give him the factory yam when Rossi calls it a day and lets see what he does.

All riders crash trying to go faster batling at the front. This isn't something that only applies to Crutchlow. And we've already had examples in the past of riders eventually getting their factory chance and not doing anymore with their equipment than they did on satellite bikes. I doubt Crutchlow would be any different. Just cause he is fast over a lap, doesn't mean he can hang with the best of them over a race distance. If he could he wouldn't have been beaten by Dovizioso so regularly during races.

@ fastfisheye

that will be difficult, while Bradl isnt really fast over a lap, his race pace (with the support he gets) is getting stronger, and Bautista, faster than Bradl, will probably have an easier time with the front suspension this year (not riding a jackhammer)

Cal has his work cut out for him, he knows hes not going to get the same level of support the four factory riders will be getting, Ducati will probably get stronger, and the two satellite Honda riders will be stronger than last year, one of which beat him in the championship. Cal is gonna have to mr. Cool this year, and get as many points as he can. The Honda is faster than the Yam, and Dani doesnt look like hes trying to hard to keep Marquez or Lorenzo behind him.

I don't want to be rude but Cal while ever he draws breath will never be a WC and will be lucky to win a few races he might get a podium every now and then.
i am not knocking the guy just being realistic

@ dast

Realistic projections don't bode too well around here. I agree with you though, Cal will likely never be a WC ( with most GP riders), but I do think he'll put up some good fights when one of the top 4 are off their game/crash out/etc. The Ducati will perform the same or worse this season, and Spies will likely land outside of the top 10 (and will likely be bettered by Iannone). There are many more, but most only want to concentrate on Rossi....for better or for worse.

If Casey had said what Cal did he would be accused of winging again "I would have been fastest if" , "slow riders try to get a tow", " slower riders on the racing line" etc etc. Where are the accusers now. Or is it just because Cal is not Australian or a threat to your favorite VR.
