you had it right the first time. it's most vital advantage is that 1 to 2 lengths/lap. which... amounts to an unassailable 5-8 second gap between winner and 1st loser by the time the white flag is shown on a 20 lap race. :( in the maritime world of 12 meter yachts, this is called a "HORIZON JOB".
