MotoGP » Schwantz 'sets the record straight' on COTA claim

"Let me set the record straight: I am the reason MotoGP is coming to Texas and no one currently associated with COTA had anything to do with the design of the actual race track" - Kevin Schwantz.

@ A B

I was merely a wee tike when Schwantz was on the scene, but I've watched old video of him. I didn't begin watching GP until high school (92-ish, and I didn't really get into it until 94). With that said, I've witnessed (and watched old video of) many really great riders.....Rossi....Doohan....Stoner...etc......but I don't see how anything that Schwantz did on a bike makes him any more of a legend than, say....Stoner (if we are to base it solely on what he's done on a bike).

"I'm curious. What makes someone a "legend"? ...Does Schwantz receive the title because he was severely injured/crippled because of the sport?"

You are confusing Schwantz with Wayne Rainey.

"but I don't see how anything that Schwantz did on a bike makes him any more of a legend than, say....Stoner"

Schwantz did it on an underpowered Suzuki, Stoner did it on what were at the time the most powerful bikes in the field - the Ducati and then the Honda.

Put Doohan on that Suzuki and give Schwantz that Honda and the championship stats change instantly.

If you can't see what made Schwantz so special as a rider no wonder you confuse him with Wayne Rainey.

You are not observant.

@ Rayborn

No, I didn't confuse him with Rainey. I didn't think I needed to be specific with regards to injuries. Hell, the year that I got really into GP, Schwantz crashed all of the time. Anyways, we can play the "put this rider on that bike" game all day long, but that doesn't mean that such a change would necessarily net a statiscal change.

Any rider that win one world Champion at Motogp is consider one Legend to the Sport so even Nicky Hayden will be remember has one Legend also like Kenny Roberts Junior for exemple and to be honest they all deserve that even Nicky he had is best sesson him 2006 and we some luke he got the Champion and was honest is not is fault that Yamaha fail so many times to be realiable.. What confuse some people is that we have many scales on the Legend Performance and the best of all time the true Legend of the Sport at the momente is Agostini but talcking about recente Motogp riders the ultimat Legend is Valentino Rossi and honestly i think he will beat Agostini... Even Stoner is one Legend to but i think that people him general when they like the rider he can have one Champion or 10 it doesnt matter what matters is that if he is one nice guy and like Motogp like kevin schwantz that is normaly presente at Motogps, also like Capirossi that dont have any Motogp Champion but they also rever

@Realist,

Only my opinion, but a legend is simply a popularity tag. People who capture the imagination of the majority in and given field are usually called legends.

Capturing the imagination may be due to personality, style, statistics, results (WC, wins etc.) or simply because people see you as one of them that "made it".

Most realistically, a combination of all the above.

Without igniting a whole new debate, one can see why Schwants is a "legend" because of how he road, the machinery disadvantages he road with, the riders he competed against and the stand and deliver rather than complain about it attitude.

A majority of GP lovers during his career, loved Schwants.

schwantz needs to get over himself. hundreds of millions of dollars spent on building CotA. how much has schwantz contributed? he needs more credentials (meaning $$$) than a single championship title to get admission to this mega-dollar development.

@CRT "Furthermore, it is Mr. Schwantz who continues to post comments in the media, which in turn causes COTA to react."

As I read it, Schwantz went to CotA for testing as part of a CRT team effort. CotA has contracted its track out for the said testing, and the CRT was an authorised attendee. CotA management discovered that Schwantz was there (doing the job he'd accepted) and, for no other reason than bloody-mindedness, demanded that he leave, and threatened to press trespass charges if he stayed.

The press picked this up, and naturally, asked a reasonably miffed Schwantz for his reaction. He gave it. CotA subsequently put out a press release which whitewashed the history.

Schwantz reacted by pointing to prior, existing documents that support his story.

CotA instigated this by kicking out of the test session.

@CRT I agree with your point that this should be played out in court based on facts (and theatrics) rather than in the media with less facts, and more theatrics.

Except that it is now in the media, so it will have a run, and the theatre continues.
