“Marquez did the fastest lap in his first race, like I did. But I crashed, so he is better than me!” – Valentino Rossi.

"I meant that titles are a precondition to enter in the top 4-5 of all times, but they're not enough as we're talking best ever here."

But it is. It is the only condition. A rider wins' a championship against the best MotoGP has to offer. Year in and year out they put themselves on the line to battle against the best. At the end of the season only one rider will come out victorious - the best - the champion. Unfortunately for some deliusional fans they wont accept this fact. Why? Because their mate quit. Only the championship counts, nothing else.

It'd be hard to repeat that feeling brought on by Rossi in Welkom '04. The only time I've had a similar feeling as a spectator since then was when Randy Couture beat Brock Lesnar in the UFC for the HW Title! Lol! Good job Vale!!

@JAS : He Did Not Win on The Duke in 2Years of Riding.
C.S. Did!

Although CS was an outlier on the duc, i don't think he can win again on the current duc. i still think he would do better on the duc than vale or dovi.

but if you think CS is a better rider than vale overall just because he rode the duc better.... than Cappirosi is a better rider than vale too..... because cappirossi manage to get a win plus few podiums almost every season on the duc.....

well if you look at it that way, vale was better on honda than CS. vale : 4 years on honda, 1 runner up + 3 WC. CS : 2 years on honda, 1 WC + 3rd

Hi
@fast fishey
If anyone it would be Schwantz:)
# Ich Agree on the Doohan part, unfortunately no one no matter how many titles great rides great personality great battles and all other things will be better than Rossi in some peoples eyes, but he is a great rider and have been for a long time, but there are more riders out there that can and have done great things, but as long as they did beat Rossi they will never be good enough acc to some/most Rossi fans, if they where from another era and never won over Rossi they are great, but otherwise they are nothing until they have 45 WC titles:)
@TedG What you are saying is that Rossi can only win on a perfect bike, yes??
#Nine Times Only the championship counts, nothing else. So what you are saying is that Doohan is a better rider than Lawson, Rainey, Roberts and Sheene??

A single rider is the best than the rest when he comes out the champion at the end of the season. Simple. We are not dumb here. You are throwing questions that have no answers. The only answer is the number of world championships. If this is not enough for you because your mate Stoner has only two in thirteen years, and he quit, then there's nothing we can do. Because it would be like explaining world peace to OBL.

@ Nine Times

I get your point but I don't totally agree.
As years and years go by, in the end titles might be the main system used to assess rider's ability, but analyzing those seasons might yield additional helpful info.

If we're talking about Rossi here, he's definitely in the Olympus -many even say at the very top- because of number of titles and race wins AND.. Also because of how they were attained (different makes, different displacements -all of them actually-, with a bike that was not best in the field, after a 2 year hiatus against strong competition, epic races and battles etc.).

Hi
# Nine Times I do understand what you are saying that the year a rider becomes WC he is best at that time, although as many here agree on WC does not equal greatness. There are many examples would you consider Faranco Uncini, Creville and Kevin Schwantz equal? Would everyone with 1 title be greater than i.e. Mamola? Would you consider Doohan greater than Roberts or Scheene? Would you consider Spencer the greatest because he is the last racer winning in two classes the same season, which no one have done ever since not even attempting (I would). Hailwood greater than Ago less WC. Rossi greater than all riders ever except Ago who have more titles???

Hi
#LOL "i believe your little hero had more crashing and moaning for 4 years then Rossi , then he ran away because rossi was going back to yam and MM was stepping up." :):)You do crash when you try harder, and Rossi was moaning even though Ducati gave him 10 times more stuff in 2 years than CS got in 4:) and I can't remember any racer that Quit and broke his contract because he was disappointing with the bike:) I only hear about that with primadonna football players:)
Cheers Claes
