While 4th isn't what Rossi wanted it's better than usual and he noted he probably could have squeezed a better result. Which to me is good news because if he has a little in reserve that will help him in the race.

@MotoMarc: I know that in simple numeric terms it's "better than usual", but use an analytical eye and ask if Rossi really did better or if he just benefited from those usually in front of him doing worse.

Besides Lorenzo being out of the session and Pedrosa crashing, the Ducatis which have been troubling him in qualifying had their worst weekend of the year. Dovi has been consistently outqualifying Rossi all year but today didn't even make Q2!

So the bottom line is either than Rossi had his best qualifying of the season, or that even with the normal leaders out he still failed to make the front row because he was outqualified by two satellite bikes & a rookie. It all depends on your viewpoint.

Rookie? Bradl? Anyway, Apart from the usual suspects at the sharp end, Rossi normally gets slower (relatively) as the grip improves, so I reckon this is equivalent to his usual 7th place start

Did anyone notice that Yamaha boss was in Tech3 garage with Cal before Qualifying, and not with Rossi?

Even without Yamaha's support Vale qualified 4th. Not many rider can do that. With Yamaha support he would take easy pole.

Yes 46OverLord. We all know he couldn't possibly have the full works bike because others are quicker than him. Maybe its because he has developed he Yamaha to go slower than when he first got it? That is what he did with the Ducati.

re: "Anyway, I'm fourth, the best qualifying of the season and especially I have a good pace, even after a lot of laps so I'm happy."

So Rossi has race pace. Rubbish! Looking at the first practice session. Sub 1:36 laps. Lorenzo 7, Crutchlow 2, Marquez 1. Rossi 0. Next dry session is practice 4. Sub 1.36 laps. Marquez 4, Rossi 1, Crutchlow 4. Bradle 2. Pedrosa 1. I predict that he will finish off the podium and by a long way.
