MotoGP » EXCLUSIVE Martin Raines (MotoGP stats) - Q&A

“I think that Valentino is suffering a little because he never had to push on a full tank of fuel and new tyres and now he's trying to do that as a 34-year-old” - Dr Martin Raines.

"Earlier in his career, when he was winning, he never had to push in the early laps. If you remember back to when he was racing Sete Gibernau or Max Biaggi and he'd be comfortable in the early laps and get into the rhythm of the race before pressing his advantage in the last half dozen laps. He could do it then because he was a step above those guys but now he can't afford to lose out. "

There we have the confirmation, Rossi never had stiff competition or else he would have max 2 championships.
Casey, Jorge, Dani or Marc would have dominated in that era.

You simply cannot draw that conclusion. You can only beat those lined up with you on the grid, and what's to say in his youth he wouldn't have raised his game to beat the current crop? He is 34 now, and that in itself is a disadvantage against the youger guys.

BoZZo, right on ! Is it Valentino's fault he was born when he was?? He was the best at the time, the same as any good rider, you can only race with the others who are also there at the same time! I reckon if Casey and crew where there way back then they would have struggled like hell with the bikes they would have had to ride!! It's the same thing!!!

Bozzo, you seem to have contradicted yourself a bit and I only agreed with the bit about a rider only putting himself up against whoever else is on the grid !!
I just wish people wouldn't constantly try to put Valentino Rossi down by insinuating he never had any decent competition!! What about Biaggi, Caparossi, Gibernau, Barros and all the other good riders from that era!!!

@herewego -

And in this interview they list first season accomplishments of outstanding riders in the top class...didn't Biaggi pole and win his first 500 race. The interview makes no mention of his first season performance. But these days people seem to act as if he wasn't a threat in 500's.
