I'd agree with you Kline... if Capirossi hadn't regularly beaten Bayliss when they were team-mates in 2003 and 2004. Valencia 2006 was truly amazing by Bayliss, but then again he was nowhere during 2004 and 2005...

MOTOGP » Capirossi: Incredible memories!

Five years as a Ducati rider will come to an 'emotional' end for Loris Capirossi at Valencia on Sunday.

Capirex was never as good as some thought.
Valencia last year gave it away ... Bayliss (who never set the GP paddock alight) came in on unfamiliar bike and never raced Bridgestones and blew everyone away. This shows the GP6 was way better than any other package and Capirossi didn't do it justice.
In 2007 Stoner really emphasised the point.
Capirossi was lucky he had lame, past-it team members like Checa and Gibernau, or he would have been rumbled a long time ago.
He's been really lucky to stay at Ducati for 5 years.

A little harsh Kline but I see your point.
If Stoner hadn't been there this year, everyone would probably have been saying the Ducati was uncompetitive, on the back of Loris' and D'Antin's result.
I guess the real test is how Loris does with the Suzuki.

I will miss Loris on a Ducati ... he made us Duc fans very happy by putting it on the podium first time out in MotoGP.

And I think he is also a gentleman - he has been pretty gracious this season despite Casey overshadowing him from the No 2 position in the team.

You think so elefantman?
From quite early in the season he was signalling to the media that he was looking to move to Suzuki or Kawasaki (whoever paid the most) and did not have a positive word to say about the team.
It is only the last round or two that he seems to have re-found some grace.

When he's on it, there's not many riders like capirex. Some of the shapes he used to get the 990 desmo into were mad/amazing/unbelievable and you always knew he was trying 100%. I'll never foget him bucking & weaving out of a final turn & 3/4 of the main straight, Julian Ryder said 'anybody else and id've said the throttle stuck open, not Lorris tho'!. Thats why I like him, fair enough he's not been the most successful, but, he's fukcing entertaining and fearless

Fair enough jn, but is that style the most effective at getting the best out of the bike?
We have seen Loris do the same with the 800 this year, yet has been way behind Stoner who has a much smoother 250 style aimed at keeping the wheels in line.
Maybe less entertaining but much more effective in getting from A to B in the quickest fashion.

If Cool Riding Style won championships then Gary McCoy would have been a multiyear champ...

The worse thing Capirossi could have done is gone to Suzuki as number 2 rider on a 1 year deal. He will end up getting dropped in favor of Spies in 2009, and having to end up riding for a 3rd rate team/bike, going to WSBK, or retiring all together. He should have taken the Ducati deal and made it for 2 years, and then retired to become Ducati Rider/Racing consultant on the Corse Team.

He should consider himself lucky since he could have been outright fired like Bayliss (a Multi Year Ducati Champ)!
