Perhaps the communication problem last year was because of the tyres speaking French, the engine speaking Japanese and the rider speaking Italian. At least with Japanese tyres the engine will understand leaving only Valentino in the dark. At least it is a way forward. As for making the loudest noise, we who speak English find if we speak VERY VERY LOUDLY and SLOWLY to foreigners they understand and take our money. Perhaps if Furusawa San slows the engine to 300 rpm and takes the silencer off Rossi will have more chance.
Or perhaps the whole article lost something in the translation. I'll read it slowly to my TZ250 when I get home and see what it thinks.

CA I don't think you're getting the subtlety here.
A big bang engine is easier on a tyre because the rest interval between power pulses (combustion strokes)is longer. In a 720deg rotation of the crank there will be 2 pulses for a big bang 4cylinder (2cylinders fired together), and 4 pulses for a screamer. The longer resting period allows the rear tyre to recover and allows longer tyre life from the same tyre on an otherwise identical machine. This means (ceteris paribus) screamers are harder on their tyres and have to run comparatively harder compounds to last race distance. Spinning the rear tyre as McCoy used to actually extends tyre life as well (I know its counter intuitive).

../2 Traction control on the other hand is managing the engine's power delivery by changing fuel or changing the ignition timing (or more primitively in the early days simply cutting spark like the old school rev limiters) in response to sensors indicating "slipping" (which can be excessive wheelspin, or it can be sideways sliding (front end in particular) or it can be too high a wheelie.TC allows you to pin the throttle earlier without fear of a highside (often caused by too early / too hard throttle application on corner exit), the sooner you have the taps open coming out of the corner, the better your exit speed onto the straight the better your laptimes.

../3 TC is unrelated to the effect that engine firing order has on tyre life. While TC have a marginal assistance to tyre life, that's not it's primary purpose, it's purpose is to assist the rider to walk the fine line between maximum drive out of a corner and lying face down in the gravel pit with his bike in pieces.

A big bang bike allows softer rubber to be used and hence has an advantage over a screamer by making it easier to avoid highsides because you have a greater amount of time (still in microseconds) to feel the slippage before it becomes a crash, or to put it another way, a higher threshold before you lose grip. That's what Furasawa is referring to.

And lastly for those decrying TC while you're at it you'd better:
- remove slipper clutches (removes the skill required to change down rapidly without locking the back wheel by rapid fanning of the clutch or judicious clutch slip).
- Remove speedshifters which automatically cut the engine for a couple of seconds to allow clutchless shifts
- remove the multiple fuelling maps buttons

All of these were things that the greats like Rainey, Doohan, Sheen, Agostini didn't have, that allowed other riders to not have to develop the outstanding skills they had to develop to deal with the lack of these technologies.

Remove TC is ******** the history of GP is innovation. Deal with it.

Oops speedshifters "cut the engine for a couple of **milli**seconds" I'd be most upset if my race shifter shut the engine down for 2 seconds as I'm about to hit the straight :-)

U want innovation? they already use robosts in Qatar at camel races - ask Dennis Noyes. This racing, not a tech competition. In 10, 15 yrs time, we wont need riders. That s were "innovation " leads us. That s were innovation is directed in every other industry -- reduce cost , increase efficiency - if we can get the rider factor out of the equation , the better. Whats the most successful series in the world? NASCAR. I dont see they care much about innovation

Ducati changed from a twin pulse(big bang) 990 in 2006,
To a screamer 800 in 2007,
& they won the world championship!!
2008, Ducati still has the 800cc sceamer V4.
