Don't you guys think it's Bridgestone that determines the amount of laps on a tire?

He was doing tire testing, which I would imagine would be at the discretion of the tire manufacturer.

Are we that insecure that we bash him for everything single thing he does? You guys are unbelievable. Replace Rossi with Stoner in this article and you guys would be creaming your shorts.

I guess it's too hard to congratulate someone and move on.

Jack - thanks, you have helped me greatly to understand something that happened many years ago: riding a CBX (the old 6-cylinder *******) I was trying to chase a mate on his 900SS duc (the old silver-tank model - well, I was younger and somewhat sillier then)through some fast twisties and it started to low-side me at a speed that would have had them scraping me up with a shovel. I pinned it and it picked up again (the next corner was bloody interesting, it had sh1t brakes..) and I had always thought that was because I'd gotten the weight back onto the fatter tyre but now I can see that what happened was mainly the front got more grip and tightened the line. Does that sound right to you?

Oscar .
just one question with your last line there. You pinned it and you front got more grip and you had a tighter line. Dont want to embarass myself further as I am not Isaac Newton but isnt that what i stated in my comment. Correct me if I am wrong

Stoner no racer craft, very quick yes. Ducati need to keep him out front,if he gets anyone near him he ends up in tears, out in front gone no problem, in the mix he's got serious problems as we've seen.

Saran - your physics was a bit off, it's not more weight but more grip - Jack has really enlightened us all I think about what actually happens, but your comments about the effect of throttle were quite correct and you opened up what to me at least has been a great discussion about how bikes get around corners, so don't be embarassed - I'll bet there are plenty of people who have learned something from what has been posted here - me for sure! Geez, once we can get past the fanboy stuff, these blogs can be really interesting, don't you agree?

i was talking about Grip edge of tyres . I believe my comments were the choice of compound of tyres therefore grip edge and not the weight. My mention the Fork being lighter, I was referring to the main set up of the Ducati is for Top speed which they ran away with last year. There is a compromise between that versus Rossi preferred corner speed settings.

Anyway thanks guys for the Physics lesson Jack eadgebe oscar et all

Oscar -yes your explanation sounds right to me. The CBX is a heavy machine and you did your front tyre a big favor in lighting its load at that difficult moment.

It seems to me you are thirsty for bike knowledge. I suggest you read "A Twist of the wrist 2" by Keith Code. It is written in simple english, no equations or other technical jargon, just the plain essentials in order to go fast safely. The no "2" is better than the number "1" which I haven't read, but those who have say you don't need it since "2" is much better. If you really want to swim into bike technical principles (not engines but chassis and handling) then Tony Foale's book is a Bible.

Stoner is faster on his time trial laps with big swooping lines unfortunately when racing you need a racing line that can incorporate overtaking. Rossi seems slower but has always fought with the pack and so uses racing lines that suit this. This is why I think Stoner struggles when in a dogfight and can only use acceleration on the straights to pass someone, as long as Rossi's bike is close he will always have a disadvantage because the racing line especially of a late good late braker naturally blocks his big swooping corners... in my opinion only... :)

Jack - thanks for all your help - I'm an Arts graduate (toilet paper Degree), my brother is an aeronautical engineer and I struggle with physics beyond the elemental but trying to understand how things and people work is always fascinating to me. I have read and not fully comprehended Foale since the Britten bike came on the scene but never known about the Keith Code works, they sound ideal for my level. Saran - you opened this whole topic up, we all tip our hats, I think. Shows that if we can stop beating each other over the head with our favourite rider prejudices there's much to be learned from each other - and hey, you don't have to hate someone just to admire the other guy.
