MotoGP » Pirelli prefers WSBK to MotoGP

"Our 'model' for motorcycle control tyres needs a very close specification between road and racing and this is not the case in MotoGP" - Giorgio Barbier, Pirelli.

Didn't some Italian website report that Pirelli approached Dorna about supplying MotoGP during the last negotiation period and that they were interested?

I can imagine why they didn't get the gig, first of all teams would have to pay for their tires, they currently don't.

All tire manufacturers have their slip-ups, but Pirelli's quality control is definitely the worst of the big 4 companies involved in motorcycle racing at the moment.

I'm also guessing Pirelli's exploits in WSBK must have been on Dorna's mind as well. I personally think a control tire should be a control tire, not here's a few different constructions and you can choose which one suits you best. How do we know Pirelli invests the same investment in tire A (which suits say an Italian moto manufacturer) vs. Tire B or C? They can't and that in itself would cause big problems in the dog-eat-dog GP paddock.
